MICK Carter takes his job as a locksmith seriously – he often has to help people out when they are climbing the walls with worry – but as for taking himself seriously, that’s an entirely different matter. Mick runs A. Short Locksmith from his home in central Maidstone and when he is asked why he uses that name when his own is very different, he explains that it is an ideal one for someone who is only five feet two inches in height! Mick pondered a number of different names when he started his business but many were taken and others unsuitable. He said: “Then I thought, well, I am a short locksmith so why not use that.”
Mick’s father was a blacksmith – they were the original locksmiths - and he spent some time in the navy and then working as a photocopier technician before settling on the modern version of his father’s calling.
As well as dealing with the
emergencies that crop up from time to time (his is a 24-hour service but he admits calls at 3.30am are thankfully rare), Mick also takes pride in his skills in advising people about how to make their homes and
barrel change on the front door of a flat a lot less than that at about £60.
Mick supplies a free security check and estimate of any work and he also does work in the related field of double glazing, repairing and replacing doors and windows, handles, hinges, locks and multipoint locking mechanisms.
Mick is a member of Business Network International which encompasses a number of local tradespeople. They meet regularly, exchange ideas and help each other out at busy times.
