SHREDDING SYMMETRY

Robin Henderson demonstrates another secret to the shredders art: 3-note per string scale shapes.

Over the last few months we’ve explored various shredding techniques such as tapping and sweep picking. Another great technique used by master shredders is 3-note per string scales. It’s best to begin by learning the 7 Major scale shapes, but to kick start the shredding we have some 3 note per string runs in A minor/C Major which use symmetrical finger patterns,

making it easy to remember which frets to pick through. It is important to take you time learning these licks, particularly as some of them feature some fairly wide stretches! Don’t worry, though. With practice you will soon be able to use these scale shapes to build long, smoothly flowing lines. Practice these examples SLOWLY, gradually building up speed. Good luck. PM

Ex1: Start on the 5th fret low-E string. Alternate pick 16th notes and repeat the same shape on the next string. On the D string, shift up 2 frets and repeat the same finger pattern across the frets 7, 9 & 10, repeating this pattern on the G string. On the B string, repeat the same finger pattern on frets 10, 12 & 13 and again on the high E string, finishing with a smooth vibrato on the 13th fret.

Ex2: This run requires some stretching! Starting on the 3rd fret pick alternately through the pattern and repeat 2 frets higher (5th fret) on the D string, and then 3 frets higher (8th fret) on the B string. Complete the lick by sliding up to the 13th fret (B string) and vibrato the high G note on the 15th fret E string.

Ex3: This cool sounding C Major scale shape develops our theme of paired picking patterns. The C Major scale would normally finish on the 13th fret high E string, but let’s extend the scale and move up the neck! From B string 12th fret pick a stretched symmetrical 1,2,4 lick on the B and top E strings. Once at the highest point (17th fret) descend the final pattern and tie off the lick with a cool slide between the B and C notes. "!
