A new chapter for Busan S

creen International is delighted to present this special supplement to mark the 2011 Busan International Film Festival. This year it has a

new director in Lee Yong-kwan, a new cinema centre and even a new spelling, as the festival switches from the old Pusan to the Romanised version of the city’s name, Busan. With 307 films screening — that staggering number

is streamlined from recent years — and more sponsor- ship than ever before, the festival is perfectly posi- tioned to transition smoothly into its new era after the retirement of former festival chief Kim Dong-ho. It’s also a big year for the Asian Project Market (for-

merly the Pusan Promotion Plan) and on page 21 we preview the 30 new projects being pitched this year,

s

while on page 26 we look at the 10 projects in the Ties That Bind event which brings Asian and European producers together. The special issue was written by Screen’s superb

team of Asia-based journalists in the run-up to this year’s BIFF, including Jean Noh reporting from South Korea, Liz Shackleton from Hong Kong, Sen-lun Yu from Beijing, Jason Gray from Tokyo and our Seoul- based critic Darcy Paquet, who reviews six BIFF titles, starting on page 16. Screen’s Asia team will be on the ground at Busan,

reporting on all the news and reviewing the new films in the festival. Keep in touch with Busan updates on ScreenDaily.com. n
