notion with colourful accuracy. The sweeping choruses that glint like rays of summer sun off a secluded, crystal-clear lake and the undertones of Motown embellish the fact that they have a firm grasp of what makes a song indelible. Secondly, lead singer Samuel Fry’s lasting tone, richly delivered, enhances each syllable of the lyrics to the point of knee-jerking surrender. Some month’s back, the band recorded a video under the green canopy of a woodland setting for Watch, Listen, which was subsequently put on their Youtube channel. The song was ‘Carla’, acoustically recorded; its gorgeous tone matched the green-glowing undergrowth of the video’s setting as the band proudly displayed the bare and noble properties of a group who resonate under a shroud of deceptive simplicity. The video was attracted the attention of official Burberry photographer, Christopher Bailey, who duly invited the band film an acoustic video in Milan and play an in-store show in the glitzy Milan Burberry store. Walking down the cobbled streets, lit up like some thousand dollar fantasy, the four humble Londonites strummed away to their new single, ‘The Idiot’, as cameras captured their melodic sway beneath the Italian sky. Now back on familiar territory, Dan Jones caught up with Life in Film guitarist/vocalist Edward Lbbotson the band to see if getting a taste of the high

life has altered their perception g PM: How does London treat you as a band? Is over dilution a problem? g EL: “I imagine London has always been over diluted with bands since the


main music industry is here. In regards to how it treats us, I don’t think London has shaped our music or been instrumental in helping us much at all, it’s true that it is very scene and trend orientated and I’m sure we have taken bits and pieces from various aspects of this but never overtly or knowingly, we’ve never really been too comfortable with getting involved in any of it as a lot appears to be too fleeting to have any significant meaning. What it does allow you is to see where things are heading, but sometimes that’s not particularly helpful as it

g EL: “I think we just felt happy about how it sounded and how we recorded it all. We worked with Mike Crossey up in Liverpool and he really tried to get us trying out stuff that we hadn’t considered doing before, so it has a freshness


and energy that perhaps some of the earlier recordings don’t.” g PM: What’s the story behind ‘The Idiot’ video? g EL: “You know what, I’m not really sure! I think we are supposed to be trapped in a repetitive sequence of events that we cant get out of, a sort of


groundhog day event, a kind of Life In Film nightmare!” g PM: After recording the ‘Carla’ video for Watch, Listen, you were approached by Christopher Bailey and then recorded a video for Burberry. Did you get a taste of the ‘high life’ while out in Milan filming this? Do you think Burberry has a strong musical connection or is this just an attempt to tap into ‘rock and roll’?


“Burberry flew us to Milan but the glamour passed us by!”


g EL: “Bit of both really, I know that Christopher Bailey who fronts Burberry is a big fan and is probably aware that he is not just doing it for us as much as we are not just doing it for Burberry, if he did just want to quickly tap into rock and roll I’m sure he could have got a slightly higher profile band than us! If there was high life in Milan it must have past us by while we drank warm coke in the


dressing room.” g PM: You’ve been working with Stephen Street on some new tracks, is this


for the album? g EL: “Yeah we’ve just finished recording a couple of tracks with him, which for us was a massive privilege, we haven’t yet mixed them down but what


we’ve heard so far is really exciting so I’d be surprised if we didn’t use them.” g PM: You’ve worked the circuit for a few years now. You must have had ups


and downs, what are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned? g EL: “When a promoter requests you play his Monday indie night with a


stage time of 7.45 the finger starts to wag!” g PM: Anything else to declare? g EL: “Oh God! you’ve put me on the spot… were playing a gig at cargo in London on October 5th and everyone should come down and see it!” PM
