The group also announced “another strong performance” in interim results

Once again the star performance came from a sub-£50m turnover company, with Milestone Group showing a 23% rise in its share price. The AIM-quoted provider of digital media and technology solutions acquired Oil Productions, a multi- platform digital media design studio, for up to £600,000.

Gender & equal pay - is there still a wide chasm?


Despite over 40 years of equal pay legislation, it seems the gender pay gap is widening rather than shrinking, with a recent report indicating that it could take up to 100 years for the chasm to close!


A recent study by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) shows


£10,500 between male and female managers doing the same job. The study speculates that it could take 98 years for women to reach the point where they receive equal pay.


So: 1, what more needs to be done to achieve pay equality between the sexes and 2, why is it that women are still paid less than their male counterparts despite the existence of legislation which is intended to avoid this very issue?


The Government recognises that more needs to be done to address the issue of the gender pay gap. Whilst the Equality Act 2010 was an opportunity to introduce more legislation to address this it was decided, following consultation, that businesses should be encouraged to introduce voluntary measures instead.


In December 2010, the Government published The Equality Strategy - Building a Fairer Britain, which sets out the government’s new approach to tackling inequality through transparency and behaviour change. The key proposals include: positive action in


working; parental leave; removal of the default retirement age; lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality; and voluntary gender pay reporting in the private sector.


Voluntary gender pay reporting is aimed at all businesses, particularly those with 150 or more employees. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has put forward proposals with guidelines on how this reporting should be carried out, including disclosure of pay


in the median hourly earnings of men and women. To date, these proposals have been met with criticism and resistance, including from the CBI, which has refused to support the plans and described them as “narrow and prescriptive”. It is speculated that if by 2013 these measures have not shown much success, the Government may bring into force section 78 of the Equality Act 2010 which requires mandatory publication of information relating to employees’ pay.


How well these voluntary measures will be adopted and their success remains to be seen. The Government has set up a ministerial group to oversee the implementation of this strategy and to review its progress annually. If the voluntary approach does not work, it is likely that the Government will take steps towards making these measures compulsory.
