Grey Coat Issue 15: September 2011 Tuesday looks at a career in the film business


The production has to provide food, transport and pay for accommodation for the employees who live out of the state in which they usually reside. This meant that I did not have to manage my money, as you would have to in most areas of work and this provision is definitely a benefit for those supported by the unions.


jobs and have such a passion that even if they don’t get recognition for this series, they have had the experience of working on it and feel grateful for that, especially in this economic climate. I found through my placement that it is really worth talking to people and asking them about their backgrounds and their passions as everyone you meet

My placement at the production of “Magic City” in Miami was a valuable learning experience for me and gave me an insight into the film business and the work that it is involved in a film production. I learnt so much over the two weeks, in the area of costuming and other aspects of the business. I was taught how to measure and fit clothes, how to adjust sound levels whilst filming to ensure that you received the best quality sound from the actor, to organise and record information for continuity purposes, the time and number of people it takes to create a few minutes of film and many new terms and techniques.


I hope it becomes a very popular series because the amount of work that every member of the crew has put into it so far shows that they deserve as much credit for it as possible. I met some amazing people. People who love their


will always have a story to tell. This experience has built my self-confidence, social and communication skills and I will never forget my time on this production. Although I no longer plan to enter this
