wisdom many years ago, and one of those was “clean up after yourself!” If we heard it once, we heard it a zil- lion dozen times; it was a fact of life growing up. But somewhere along the line, some of the old time phrases got lost, or at least a little mixed up. With the economy re-

covering a bit, still the lament of exhibitors is…keep the showing cost down. Showing is exciting but when that dreaded moment of check out time comes around, it is still enough to make breathing a little difficult. How can the costs be cut, how does an exhibitor partner with the show managers to save money when possible? One way is to follow the old time parent’s statement of “Clean up after yourself.” Not too long after the last horse is

on the trailer and headed off the show grounds, an army of workers pop up out of nowhere and begin the monu- mental task of cleaning up. Shovels, picks, brooms and racks in hand, they move into the show grounds and clean up the stalls after the horses, people and

dogs. When horses arrive at the

grounds, the place is clean and the stalls are ready for fresh bed- ding and horses. As the horses leave, with very few exceptions,

ings and not eaten feed…….it is about the trash! The pictures speak for them-

selves. To give credit to the barns who leave their stalls and areas clean, we have included pictures of those taken right after they left a show; it is pretty easy to figure out which trainers these barns be- long too. Fact of the matter is that it costs

a lot of money for the cleanup and those costs have to be ab- sorbed somewhere. “BUT, we pay for that to be done,” is the de-

the stalls, tack rooms and groom rooms are left stacked with trash. It takes hours to simply get the trash/ leftovers out of the stalls and into the ally in preparation for the big tractors to come scoop it up, but then it all has to be sort-

small army task. The issue is not one of the used shav-

fense. Ok, you think you do, but fees have to include this army of workers, quite possibly the show cost could be a bit smaller if it wasn’t about the trash, THAT is what takes the time. Plus, one could bet…..mom and

dad would be proud they passed on a little wisdom.
