Saturday 2nd July 2011 saw the arrival of globe trotting cyclists Huw and Carolyn Thomas in Donaghadee. Accompanied by cyclists from North Down Cycle Club they were met and welcomed by members of local Rotary Clubs and the owner of Pier 36 Dennis Waterworth. Dennis had generously agreed to give Huw and Carolyn free overnight accommodation.

The Rotary Club of Donaghadee presented the two cyclists with a cheque for £600 for Shelter Box.

On their arrival the two cyclists had completed 9,970 miles of a 10,000‑mile journey in aid of the disaster relief charity Shelter Box.

They left the UK last August and have ridden across North America, New Zealand, Australia and several European countries, linking with Shelter Box affiliates in each country theyʼve visited. On Sunday morning they set off for Newcastle en route to Dublin.

The Rotary Club of Athlone recently celebrated 25 years of service in the local community when 65 members, past members and their guests gathered to mark the occasion. The Club first met in January 1985 and was established by a group of 28 founding members, 11 of whom attended a celebration in the Olive Grove Restaurant in Athlone on July 11th. As part of the anniversary celebrations the Club presented certificates for 25 years of continuous, active membership to the following founding members who remained active members of the Club throughout its first 25 years ‑ Danny Fay, George Eaton, Ian Boles, Kerry Sloane, Noel Heavey and Tom Reid. Sadly Kerry was unable to attend on the night to accept his certificate in person. Other founding members present on the night included John Killalea, Fergus Carolan, Patrick Casey, Jim Keane, Michael Lucitt and John Ronaghan.

Plans are afoot to mark the occasion of Ballycastleʼs Charter Night with a weekend of events.

Playing host to the official ceremony will be the Central Restaurant on October 14th. The evening will get under way with a pre‑ meal reception commencing 7.30pm. Tickets at £35/euro40 will be strictly limited to number 150 on a first come first served basis, so guests are encouraged to plan quickly. Dress will be formal – a chance for

the ladies to invest in the latest fashions. For those wishing to avail of the excellent B+B facilities at a special package rate, there will be the opportunity to stay for one or (hopefully) two nights – creating the perfect opportunity to join with Ballycastle members keen to showcase the town and itʼs surrounding area. To this end, numbers permitting, guided tours will be laid on to The Giantʼs Causeway/Bushmills Distillery and maybe a game of golf.

Sunday morning will give guests the chance to travel overseas and attend Church/Chapel on Rathlin Island – salt air and sermon.

As far as Ballycastle Rotary Club is concerned; autumn is a time of enthusiasm. Booking details and further information will be made available on a Club by Club basis in the near future but for now please plan to celebrate the arrival of autumn as never before!

Athlone has done much for the local community. In reviewing the Clubʼs history, out‑going President Simon Cavanagh remarked that “one of our Clubʼs major achievements was the establishment of the Athlone Community Taskforce (ACT) in 1992 when, under Noel Heaveyʼs leadership, the Club raised over €300,000 to purchase a building and our Club members helped get the organisation off the ground.”

The Club has also raised funds for those in need in the local community. Recent fund raising examples include a St. Patrickʼs Day Ball in 2006, that raised almost €20,000 for charities including The Open Door Project and the Athlone Hospital Patients Fund, and a breakfast presentation in 2008 by the then Minister of Health Mary Harney TD, that raised €15,000 for Console. In addition the Club collected over €5,000 for Athlone people affected by the floods in 2009 and over €5,000 last Christmas for local charities.
