The Rotary Foundation New team - same goals

The Rotary Foundation has a new chair and some new team members, but our mission has not changed – it exists to enable Rotarians to advance world peace through the improvement of health, support of education, and alleviation of poverty. This year, we are focusing on three Foundation goals.

Our first goal

Is to contribute to the worldwide eradication of polio initiated by Rotary in 1985 with the launch of Polio Plus. Since July 2007, when the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded Rotary a $350 million grant, every Club in our District undertook the Challenge to give $6000 before June 30th 2012 – giving us over 55 months to raise funds. Clubs within our District have employed a variety of initiatives – Focus on the Crocus, Thanks for Life, and many other fund raising activities.

Current figures amount to £405,488.24, our target total is £444.000.00 so we still have some way to go but with a final sustained push we can make it happen. To date some 18 clubs have met or greatly exceeded the target of $6000 – The Rotary Club of Belfast in particular has raised an outstanding amount, The Rotary Clubs of Dublin and Lisburn have also well exceeded the target –our congratulations go out to their club members, some 17 other clubs are well on the way to meeting the target by the end of June 2012. To all clubs who are doing their best, please continue the fundraising work, with one last push from every club in our District we will achieve our target. It is still within our grasp to successfully complete this life changing project.

Our second goal

Is that every one of us should feel that we own The Rotary Foundation. We can do that through our service and our contributions. When you make an annual contribution through the Annual Programs Fund (or Sustaining Membership) you are supporting Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange, Peace fellowships and Grants for Humanitarian and Educational Programs. Nearly half of our clubs give more than $100 per capita and many already have Sustaining Members. This year our goal is to increase the proportion of Sustaining Members across District 1160– those members who personally donate US$100 per annum (£65/Euro 80) Group Study Exchange On the 1st September

2011 the in coming GSE team from District 9630 Brisbane will commence their itinerary around Ireland. The team is led by President Louise Howden from the Rotary Club of Salisbury, and the team members are Ellen Heathwood, Kristina Whitehead, Jason Micklejohn and Matthew Waters.

Please ensure you invite the team to speak to your club when they are in your area. We have now selected the GSE Team Leader to lead the out‑going team to Brisbane in March 2012 our congratulations go to Cliodhna Rae from the Rotary Club of Coleraine. We will announce details of the out‑going team of four non‑Rotarians in due course Ambassadorial Scholars We are delighted to have 6 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars assigned to District during 2011‑2012. They are: ‑

Shannon Cantwell TCD, host ‑Dublin Viking. Katie Cooper UU Magee, host ‑ L/Derry. Katherine Goodrich TCD host ‑ Dublin North. Woody Hanson QUB, host ‑Belfast Elaine Householder UU Magee, host ‑ L/Derry. Nora Tobin TCD, host ‑ Dublin Central. Please ensure you invite our Ambassadorial Scholars to your club they serve as unofficial ambassadors of goodwill and will delight your club members with their presentations. Out‑going Ambassadorial Scholars interviews are taking place in September 2011. Matching Grants The Rotary Foundation is now accepting matching Grants applications for International Service projects.

Congratulations go to PDG Gussie Hynes the Rotary Club of Omagh on completion of the Jaipur Limb Project which provided materials for lower limb prosthesis, equipment for making limbs and a 6 week training course to enable the Foundation of People with Disabilities to make and fit lower limbs in Kabale Uganda. Congratulations also to the Rotary Club of Comber for the successful completion of their matching grant programme with the Rotary Club of São Paulo‑Tatuapé, Brazil

Our third goal

Is to increase the District contributions to the Permanent Fund, by increasing the number of benefactors (either in cash $1000 or a codicil in a will) across the membership. This ensures the long term viability of TRF and its programs as a percentage of the fund is spent annually to supplement TRF programs Future Vision We canʼt deny that as Future Vision rolls out worldwide, how funds will be accessed by clubs and Districts will change but as we strengthen our giving then we can be prepared to do more work and develop more sustainable programs in the future

Foundation Seminars The Foundation Team will be running a series of seminars in October/November, dates for Enniskillen and Belfast to be confirmed, Mallow Saturday 22nd October and Dublin Sunday 23rd October The strength of The Rotary Foundation, our Foundation is determined by you. Please support the funds and the programmes and together let us make 2011‑12 another great Rotary year.

Rotary Foundation offers you immortality

The Permanent Fund Initiative (PFI) was created back in 1996.

Its purpose is simple: to provide an ever‑ increasing stream of revenue that will secure the future of the Foundationʼs programmes. As the name suggests, it is an endowment fund. All contributions are invested in perpetuity and only the interest will be spent. The trustees review fund performance twice yearly and agree the exact % of interest that can be spent.

In many ways, The Permanent Fund mirrors the personal pensions that so many of us rely on to fund retirement. Pay today and receive the benefits tomorrow! At the outset, a fund target of US$1.0 billion by 2025 was agreed and Foundation officers at Club, District and Zone levels have been working methodically towards that goal. Whilst Club & District contributions are most welcome, support is sought, primarily, from Personal Giving

Within the US$1.0 billion goal, $95million has been ring‑fenced for the Rotary Peace Centres ($90 million to support 120 fellowships / $5million to fund one‑time fellowships with immediate support). Our own Colum McLoughlin from

Newtownabbey Rotary Club represents RIBI and Europe on the Peace Centres Initiative Committee and would be delighted to talk to any interested Club or Rotarian. Essentially, there are 2 ways in which we can support the Permanent Fund: • by contributing cash or assets • by bequest (codicil to our will) If you appreciate the work of the Rotary Foundation why not become a Foundation Benefactor today? A contribution of at least US$1,000 is all it takes! £550 + Gift Aid / 700 euro Or do it the easy way: a US$1,000 codicil to your will!

A contribution or bequest of at least US$25,000 entitles you to name a fund – a fund that will exist way beyond your lifetime, generating interest that will support the Foundationʼs mission of Doing Good in the World Why not give me a call? PDG Howard Caskie, Permanent Fund Coordinator for RIBI & Europe
