The Sage Centre
Gibside Chapel
Newcastle and the Gateshead quays offer a great chance to take a longer break – book an extra night at the Hilton, take in the Clas- sic FM Concert Series with the Northern Sinfonia and three major Mozart performances at the Sage Centre on Monday. It’s just five minutes riverside stroll from the hotel. Visit Newcastle’s vibrant city centre just a walk away over the
iconic Tyne bridges, take in the international art at the Baltic Ex- change (one of Europe’s largest galleries), shop at the Metro Centre (still the biggest mall), explore the National Trust’s Gibside Gardens
and historic Chapel (ten minute’s drive away), view the Angel of the North. The area right next to the Hilton has top-class bistros, restaurants, pubs and clubs all on the banks of the Tyne. Within easy driving distance are Hadrian’s Wall, Durham Cathedral, Sunderland’s glass museum, Belsay House, the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne, the beaches from Tynemouth and Cullercoats to Whitley Bay. It can be lovely in early October but even if it’s not great weather Newcastle itself offers plenty to do in one of the most ‘human scale’, friendly and attractive of British city centres.
