Scanlon, Hilliard scholarships
awarded By DEBORAH A. MILES Two children of members in PEF Region 1
were selected to receive the 2011 Judi Scanlon Memorial Scholarship. Curtis Steed Jr and Justin Tay will each receive a $1,000 award.
Steed is a senior at Xavier STEED JR.
University in Cincinnati where he is majoring in social work. He plans on getting his master’s degree at the University of Buffalo. He is dedicated to helping those less fortunate and has volunteered at soup kitchens. He worked as a paid intern for People Inc, helping those with developmental disabilities.
He is a music buff, enjoys watching basketball and football, and likes to swim. His father is Curtis Steed, a management specialist 2 at the state Office of Children and Family Services. Tay is a pre-med student and attends the
University of Pittsburgh where he is studying molecular biology. Tay enjoys all aspects of medicine, such as research and teaching. He mentored his sister for a biology exam and was an undergraduate teaching assistant for genetics. He performed traumatic brain injury research and focused on stem cell research during his summer break. He shadowed a neurosurgeon and witnessed the removal of a golf-ball-size tumor from someone’s brain. He is dedicated to helping others and becoming the best physician he can be. He is the son of Thiam Tay, a civil engineer 2 at the state Department of Transportation. Marissa Testa received the

$500 Patrick Hilliard Scholarship from PEF Division 192. Testa heads to New York City to study advertising and marketing communications at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She graduated from Guilderland High School with high honors. She earned several awards including Excellence in
College Marketing, and awards in math, foreign language and history. She was editor of her high school yearbook. Her mother is Kim Testa, a disability analyst 3 at the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.
