Members tee-off for heartfelt reasons
PEF members have earned the reputation of
helping others, even when the state and economy are facing challenging times. They continued to do so on a picture-perfect day in July when 152 members and retirees participated in a golf tournament raising $3,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event was a tribute to Lou Matrazzo, a
former PEF vice president and other PEF members who suffered heart-related deaths. PEF Region 1 Coordinator Kevin Hintz
organized the tournament held at the Mohawk River Country Club in Rexford July 14. “Even during tough economic times, our
members show up to help support causes important not only to the union, but globally,” Hintz said. “It is a day of enjoyment, but everyone there was in full support of donating to the AHA.” Linda McKiernan, a state police forensic
scientist 3, said she did not personally know Matrazzo. “I wanted to participate because I have heard
so many positive things about Lou,” McKiernan said. “It’s a very worthy cause. It also may make things easier for Lou’s family, his daughter and sister, knowing people remember and care.” Wayne Borek, a research associate at the
state Office of Children and Family Services, said the event brought members together for the good of others. “This tournament shows there is unity in
PEF,” Borek said. “It’s a time to come together to do something positive.” Hintz said the tournament was a big
success. As far as the actual tournament went, there
were some happy winners, too. In the mixed-couples category, Jay
Barkenhargen, George Barna, Christine Brown and Paul VanBuren came in first. Walt Nagel, Ed Chavanick, Steve Sleasman
and Kyle Sleasman won the all-men category, while Eileen DeRensis, Mair Lasch, Kari Matteo and Barb Rudzinski took the prize in the all- women category.
