East Lothian is a great place to visit if you like the outdoors. With miles of beautiful coastline, we provide the perfect playground for watersports activities from surfing in Dunbar to sailing in North Berwick.

‘A real highlight to our trip to Scotland - don’t miss it.’ Visitor to Tantallon Castle

East Lothian boasts a number of fantastic medieval castles and tower houses. Tantallon Castle is located in a dramatic location overlooking the cliffs and Bass Rock, Hailes Castle nestles by the side of the River Tyne, overlooked by Traprain Law. Some of the most important battle sites in Scotland can also be found here. The Battle of Pinkie in 1547 involved more than 40,000 troops as the Scots fought the English to prevent Mary Queen of Scots marrying Prince Edward. Athelstaneford is the Home of The Saltire – the Scottish Flag and you can find out all about the battle and the history of St Andrew and his flag at the Flag Heritage Centre.

East Lothian has many of the best beaches around, including Longniddry, Gullane, Yellowcraig, North Berwick, Tyninghame, Belhaven Bay and Seacliff. All have spectacular views and glorious sand.

The coast is also the route for the John Muir Way, a long distance walk taking in the full coast of East Lothian from Musselburgh to Dunbar.

Traprain Law and North Berwick Law are just two of a large number of fantastic hill forts that can be explored. There are also a huge number of churches across the area.
