Workshops for Sculptors: Beginning - Advanced
Year Round with Karen Ryer
2011 workshop.. July 10th - July 31st
with Maestro de la Pietra, Ante Marinovic
OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS I HAVE HEARD OF MANY SCULPTORS WHO HAVE CLOSED THEIR STUDIO DOORS BECAUSE OF THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE. PUBLIC ART FOR MUNICIPALITIES HAS SLOWED DOWN OR DRIED UP. DEVELOPERS WHO WERE GOOD SUPPLIERS OF CONTRACTS HAVE PULLED IN THEIR COLLECTIVE HORNS AND MANY LARGE SCULPTURES DESIGNED TO GRACE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED OR PUT ON HOLD UNTIL THE ECONOMIC STORM BLOWS OVER.
Well, the economic storm shows few signs of blowing over. What do sculptors do? Some are creating smaller works in hopes that they are more readily saleable. Some have left galleries and started their own in order to gain a larger percentage of their retail price, forgoing any wholesale pricing needed by commercial galleries. Some sculptors have branched out into more architectural approaches to their work. Many are making functional art.
