Waterfront News New Facility Bridges Gap Between

Exhibits and Storage

Penobscot Marine Museum will open an innovative new type of artifact display with the inauguration of the Seabag Visible Stor- age Center on Saturday, July 23. The new facility, which the museum describes as a cross between a formal exhibit and curatorial storage, will make more than 100 additional items available to museum visitors and re- searchers.

“We have so many fascinating items in storage that the public rarely sees because formal exhibit space is limited,” said Collec- tions Manager Cipperly Good. “By removing the constraints of a formal exhibit while still maintaining proper artifact storage condi- tions, the Seabag Visible Storage Center al- lows us to cycle new items for public display on a regular basis.” Good added that a com- puter in the center will provide access to the museum’s object database, allowing users to look up details on any artifact, whether on display in the Seabag or in regular storage. Among the items that will be on display initially in the 1,424-square foot facility are an Australian war club, a model of a West Indian whaling boat, an intricately carved nine-

teenth-century Chinese table, nautical arti- facts ranging from ditty boxes to ship’s wheels, and paintings of ships, ship captains, and ship captains’ wives. Funding for the facility was provided by the Davis Family Foundation and the Maine Humanities Council.

Museum officials will officially open the new facility at 2:00 p.m., after which the dis- play will remain open until 5:00 p.m. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is part of Penobscot Bay Day, the museum’s 75th an- niversary celebration that features live mu- sic, guided tours, nautical skills demonstra- tions, a silent auction, and birthday cake for all. Penobscot Bay Day runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, and admis- sion is free.

For the two weeks following Penobscot Bay Day, the Seabag Visible Storage Center will be open Monday through Friday, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., with weekend hours to be an- nounced. For later dates and more informa- tion, contact the museum’s Admission Cen- ter at 207-548-0334.

Passing Over the Bar: Brimigion and Howard LLOYD BRIMIGION

STONINGTON - Lloyd Brimigion, 84, died May 25, 2011, at a Deer Isle nursing home. He was born May 31, 1926, in Stonington, son of Lloyd Kenneth and Jennie M. (Jones) Brimigion. Lloyd was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was a friend to all and a special friend. He was known for his sparkling eyes and warm, wonderful smile. He was also known for his love of yachts, antique cars, photography, dancing and golfing. He is survived by one brother, Joseph Carlton “Carmie” Brimigion of Bristol, CT. His inter-

ment was held at Greenwood Cemetery, Oceanville. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Island Pantry or Historical Society of Stonington.

I knew Lloyd for more than 30 years as we both had a special love for maritime history and collecting maritime artifacts. Lloyds was especially very knowledgeable about Deer Isle and Stonington maritime history and collected anything he could about it. He had a special interest in the granite businesses and the area men who

served on board yachts. Another love of Lloyd’s was maritime art and over the years he certainly amassed a fine collection. I will certainly miss the afternoons we spent over the years talking about maritime subjects.

CHARLES R. HOWARD

ORRINGTON - Charles R. Howard, 64, died June 7, 2011, at his home. A graveside service for the family will be held at a later date.
