Diversity & Inclusion: Making Freddie Mac Stronger

At Freddie Mac, we recognize that having a diverse workforce is essential to our business, our mission and the critical role our company is playing to support the nation’s housing recovery. Having a diverse range of experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives helps us more effectively understand and serve the nation’s homeowners, renters and our communities.

Freddie Mac’s workplace is diverse, with almost 50 percent of our population female and 48 percent minority. Last year, minorities made up 44 percent of total new hires and nearly half of all promotions. Also, 30 percent of our employees holding senior management positions are minorities – and more than 50 percent are African American. Moreover, our staff is also rich in cultural and ethnic diversity with individuals who come from dozens of nations and speak many languages. We currently have 415 foreign nationals, representing 27 different countries and 26

different native languages. Networking & Mentoring

Freddie Mac supports the growth and engagement of diversity through its employee network groups. Seven employee network groups offer opportunities for professional development as well as an open and inclusive environment for networking and sharing.

Groups host frequent events that include speaking engagements, leadership panels, career coaching and other cultural activities. These groups also support our core work by helping the business areas better understand and reach diverse communities. More than 25 percent of our employees have joined these groups.

For example, recent activities for ARISE (African-Americans, Resources, and Information Sharing for Everyone)—which promotes personal and professional growth for African Americans--have included guest speakers presenting on topics such as African American ancestry and African American

entrepreneurs, as well as career development workshops. Education & Professional Development

In 2010, Freddie Mac continued to engage its employees through education and professional development programs. Freddie Mac University (FMU), the company’s integrated online and instructor-led learning curriculum, provides learning development opportunities in a variety of areas including cross- cultural competency, unconscious bias, micro-inequities, cross- generational workforce, as well as self-efficacy training across demographic groups. Last year, more than 40 percent of our workforce participated in diversity education and training.

We also provide development opportunities through our “Leadership Talent Review” Succession Planning Program. Using this process, we identify high-potential employees for open positions, create customized development plans and recommend opportunities for external executive education, coaching, mentoring, 360-degree feedback and strategic job assignments.

In addition, we encourage employees to participate in external professional development programs by organizations such as National Black MBA, National Association of Black Accountants and Executive Leadership Council. Freddie Mac has established long-term relationships with these and other groups, and often participates in and supports their events.

Governance & Results

We continue to build on our commitment to developing business strategies that are focused on the needs of a diverse workforce and workplace. Our Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement is led by Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, Subha Barry, and is tasked with helping the company meet its business, community relations, and mission objectives while at the same time directly impacting organizational culture and representing our social engagement and responsibility views.

In addition, we established an Executive Diversity Council to ensure a proper balance of unique perspectives and ideas within our officer and senior director ranks. The Council is led by our CEO, Ed Haldeman, and is comprised of other senior leaders, as well as members drawn from our employee population.

Our diversity and inclusion efforts have consistently earned us recognition as an “employer of choice” and “best place to work” by prominent diversity and inclusion-focused publications and organizations.

Our company is at the heart of an historic transformation in one of the most important sectors of the economy. Freddie Mac presents a rare career opportunity to do work that matters to families, the future of the housing finance system, and the economy. It’s our diversity that helps us understand the communities we serve and enriches our own personal and professional development.
