Statue tribute to town armed forces
A BRONZE statue is being sculpted to honour Maidstone-based 36 Engineers Regiment. When complete, the life-size image,
depicting an engineer in battle fatigues returning froma bomb-disposal task in Helmand Province in Afghanistan, will stand in Brenchley Gardens. An appeal to raise the £35,000 needed for the project got underway with a flag raising ceremony in the gar- dens. The flag, raised by local cadets, was then flown from Maidstone Town Hall until last month’s Armed Forces Day.
Speaking at the event, town mayor
Cllr Brian Mortimer said: “Armed Forces Day reminds us all of the great sacrifices made by our brave soldiers serving their country and gives a huge morale boost to them and their fami- lies.” Kent Deputy Lieutenant Bill Cock-
croft also gave a short address. County Cllr Dan Daley said: “Maidstone peo- ple, having given the regiment the free- dom of the borough, have expressed a wish to make a permanent memorial to all those serving men whose bravery we all salute.” The statue, which is being crafted by sculptor Mary Cox, will be unveiled in

Hope for future Bearsted events
BEARSTED Parish Council is hopeful that the cancel- lation of this year’s Musicon the Green will have “no ef- fect” on other events on The Green. The council called off this summer’s event after the
Safety Advisory Group, consisting of police and coun- cil agencies, voiced a number of safety concerns. The parish said it did not have the time nor money tomeet these recommendations. Fears that future publicevents might now be called
off over SAG advice were reduced after the annual car- nival and fayre was due to go ahead last month follow- ing a meeting with the advisory body. Other annual events on The Green include a sports
and activity day and classic car show. A fireworks dis- play takes place at Church Landway. Parish council chairman Chris Dyke said:“We have had to pass on in- formation to other organisers of events at The Green, and they have to think about it, but hopefully therewill not be an effect on these.” After SAG admitted its concerns over traffic arrang-
ments for the carnival procession that goes from Madg- inford to The Green, money was spent on new high-visibility tabards, trafficmanagement road signs and amber warning lights adding a further £500 to the cost of this year’s event. The police blockade enabling the procession to cross Ashford Road took place this year for the last time. Police say that the organisers will have responsibility for it in future. Parish councillor Pat Marshall, who is president of
the fayre committee, said: “Although there was a lot more work to do, we pulled our finger out, went over the route again and managed to get the event on. What- ever expense we made this year will be an investment for future fayres.” Organisers of the fayre and carnival also doubled the number of volunteers and marshals to over 50 to assist on the day. “We are not anti Music on the Green.” Letters - p30
