September target for new birthing centre

TEN lorries were used to carry the modules to create Maidstone Hospital’s new birthing centre. The pre-fabricated com- ponents were then assem- bled at the start of a programme to add brick cladding and a pitched roof before fully equipping it. The centre is being lo-

cated on land at the back of Priority House after being transported from Driffield, North Humberside. When ready for use in September, it will contain two birthing rooms, two consulting rooms, four bed- rooms, a kitchen diner and lounge. It will also be a base for community midwives. The centrewill be used by pregnant women expected to have a straightforward birth and who prefer to be in a non-medical setting. Its opening will coincide

with the transfer of other maternity services from Maidstone Hospital to the new Tunbridge Wells Hos- pital at Pembury 14 miles away.

£18k hot tubs haul

TWOluxury hot tubs, valued at over £18,000, were stolen from Nottcutts in Newnham Court, Bearsted Road, Maidstone. Police believe the theft must

have taken place over a long pe- riod of time. The premises were broken into and the tubes were drained. It is thought the items would have had to be dragged out and then a vehicle had to break into the car park to re- move them from the premises.

The vehicle may have been a Nissan flatbed truck. One of the offenders was a white male, in his early to late 20s, wearing a green hoodie and blue jeans. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 12, between 8pm and 12.40am the following day. A few weeks earlier, KCC member Cllr Gary Cooke had a hot tub stolen from a holiday home he owns in Holling- bourne.

Traders group bids to run town’s CCTV THE body that acts as a mouthpiece for Maidstone town centre has put in a bid to run its CCTV system. There was an outcry from local businesses when it was re- vealed Medway Council – from its regional hub in Strood – might take over monitoring the town’s CCTV set-up. Maidstone Town Centre Management (TCM), a private limited company dedicated to improving the town’s trading environ- ment and its image, launched a “hostile” campaign to persuade the borough council to put the contract out to tender. TCM succeeded – and entered the bidding battle. Town centre manager Bill Moss said: “If we move to the final

stage of bidding we will be proposing to run the service from the town centre.”

take ownership of the new centre in late August and open the doors for mothers from Thursday, September 22 at 8am.”

Extension blocked A PROPOSED side and rear extension at 53 Eyhorne Street, Hollingbourne, has been refused. Maidstone Council felt the application

was “out of character with, and unsym- pathetically designed in relation to, the existing house”. However, it was suggested the appli-

cant seek further advice regarding the roof of the extension.
