WHOTELS ANNOUNCES 2011 DESIGNERS OF THE


FUTURE AWARD W Hotels Worldwide continues its successful collaboration with Design Miami/ Basel with the announcement of the 2011 Designers of the Future Award. This event marks the second occasion that the two organisations have collaborated on the award, having announced the coveted award along with their partnership at Salone del Mobile in Milan one year ago.

THE BLOC One of the UK’s most innovative hotels officially opened in Birmingham in April. Bloc Hotel is a brand new, exciting hotel concept combining a cutting edge approach to design and build with operational flair. The four storey, 73 bedroom hotel in the city’s thriving Jewellery Quarter, breaks boundaries in the UK hotel sector, drawing on forward-thinking ideas from around the globe to provide guests with the ultimate hotel experience at an affordable price. Taking loose inspiration from Japanese pod style hotels, the Bloc concept sees beautifully crafted, custom- made boutique quality bedrooms which, using a radical build system allows the rooms to be quickly stacked and wrapped to complement the surrounding environment.


WORK IT OUT Noda Designs designed and coordinated a private members fitness club in Notting Hill calledMark Anthony's. The brief was simple, the client wanted to create a space, which was clean, fresh and energising. The client also wanted to create a club, which was personal and bespoke, different to your typical gym.

Scott Brownrigg has completed an elegant 30,000 sq ft refurbishment for international law firmBaker & McKenzie LLP, located on the 6th floor of 100 New Bridge Street, London. The £600,000 refurbishment reflects Baker & McKenzie’s global corporate branding, yetmaintains a strong sense of individuality, featuring high quality finishes and furniture


throughout. The sophisticated meeting rooms’ double up as fine dining areas using comfortable


chairs fromInterstuhl, coupled with elegant walnut tables fromHowe. Tailor designed, high quality fixed credenzas, which use Strata stone and white lacquer, and a feature Kvadrat upholstered back wall complete the elegant look. The modern reception area features a new illuminated desk produced fromCorian, stone and leather; an


elegant coffee bar and drinks counter has finishes tomatch the credenzas in the fine dining areas; the striking ceiling and feature walls use linear strip lighting and narrow irregular brick bond upholstered panels to create a sense ofmovement and regularity, whilst reflecting the Baker & McKenzie brand.Many elements of the original fit out were re-used using French polish and decoration tomaximumeffect.

Barbican Foodhall and lounge shortlisted for restaurant and bar design awards


The Barbican Foodhall and Barbican Lounge, two leading cultural eateries designed by SHH and located in the heart of the City of London, have been shortlisted for the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, established to reward designers and operators for design excellence.

ince opening last year, the Barbican Foodhall and Barbican Lounge have


both received strong praise for their interior design. The Barbican Lounge has


been shortlisted in the Independent Restaurant category. The Lounge is a striking, contemporary space, which combinesmid-century Scandinavian furniture with a bold red and deep turquoise colour scheme, set against the exposed hammered aggregate walls of the Barbican and lit with unique light installations fromBeirut designers PSLab. Both the bar and restaurant walk out on to a stylish terrace area featuring seating pods, interspersed with seasonal plants, designed by RHS


Chelsea Flower Show double- winner, Kate Gould. The Barbican Foodhall on


the ground floor includes floor to ceiling displays of the finest produce with seating areas divided by shelves featuring a stunning olive jar light installation, also by PSLab. A more informal venue, the Barbican Foodhall has been shortlisted in the ‘Restaurant, Bar or Club in another space’ category. Commenting on the
