Brits accounted for 23.4 per cent of Spanish properties bought by foreign residents in 2010 – more than any other nation; currently there are circa 850,000 (registered) British residents in Spain; the UK and Spain are two of the best connected countries by air in the world (600 fl ights a day). When representatives of the Spanish Government rolled out the above facts and
fi gures at a London conference in May, it was obvious why they chose the UK as the launch pad for a Europe-wide road show designed to regain the confi dence of foreign buyers in its battered property market. The aim of the tour, headed by leading Spanish ministers, is to simultaneously stimulate property sales – in a market where prices in some coastal developments have fallen by 40 per cent from their peak – and reassure foreigners that Spain today is a safer and more transparent place to buy property. Measures to achieve this, and announced by the delegation, include: public access on-line to Spain’s Property Registry; the inclusion of every property’s building licence in English in the Property Registry; and, also in the Property Registry, the fl agging up of any irregularities that render a property illegal. The Spanish Government has also compiled an English guide to buying property, available on-line along with more information about the housing market – see
www.fomento.gob.es/spanishrealestate. We focus on two areas of Spain this issue – lettable holiday homes in the Canaries (page 27) and the Axarquía region in Andalusia (page 32).
