AV closes two on Sket AV Pictures has sold girl-gang movie Sket to Wild Side Films for France and Tiberius Film for Germany. The film is in post- production and will premiere at LUFF in June.


Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund unveils selection The Hubert Bals Fund of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has announced details of its spring selection round supporting 22 projects. One is Mohammad Rasoulof’s Goodbye, which premieres this week in Un Certain Regard (review, p20). Other film-makers backed by the fund include Adrian Biniez, Ciro Guerra, Nicolas Pereda and Hawa Essuman. For the full list, see screendaily.com.


DOX:LAB directors revealed CPH:DOX has announced the 20 directors for its DOX:LAB, which pairs European professionals with directors from Asia, South America and the Middle East. The participants this year will include Ivan Fund (Argentina), Edwin (Indonesia), Flora Lau (Hong Kong), Andreas Koefoed (Denmark), Jakob Schulsinger (Denmark) and Gustavo Beck (Brazil).


Rat King rolls in Estonia Principal photography has begun in Estonia on Petri Kotwica’s thriller Rat King, which won the Screen International Best Pitch Award at the 2009 Baltic Event. Starring Max Ovaska and Julius Lavonen, the Finland-Estonia co-production between Making Movies and Allfilm will continue shooting until June 7.


Sex Pistol’s Norwegian Son

Independent goes to Hell


BYANDREAS WISEMAN Sales-production company Inde- pendent has a new distribution element which has picked up sev- eral documentaries for the UK, including Danfung Dennis’ Afghanistan war exposé Hell And Back Again and Aaron Aites’ Nor- wegian black-metal doc Until The Light Takes Us. The London-based company


has also acquired Lena Dunham’s comedy Tiny Furniture from Indomina. Rights for both docs


were secured from the films’ pro- ducers. Independent also took UK digital rights to US documentary Audience Of One. Launched last year, the distribu-


tion arm, headed by Eric Stevens, will acquire six to eight films per year. “We are looking to pick up niche product that requires a little more effort from the audience — social-awareness films, US indies and the missed gems,” he said. Independent releases Third Star in the UK next weekend.

Miramax signs streaming deal with Netflix


BY JEREMYKAY Miramax CEO Mike Lang has wasted little time here on the Croisette cutting deals to exploit the library, and has announced a streaming agreement with online subscription service Netflix to start in June. Under the terms of the non-


exclusive pact, it is understood up to 500 titles from the legendary catalogue, such as Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare In Love and Cold Mountain, could become availa- ble to view on a rotating basis across multiple platforms. In what Lang described as


“probably one of the largest library deals that has been done to date on Netflix”, up to 300 films could be available to sub- scribers in any given month.


Fox International plans award with HAF


BY LIZ SHACKLETON Fox International Productions (FIP) and the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) are collaborating on a new award to be given out annually at HAF, beginning next year.


The organisations will jointly


select one Chinese-language project to receive the Fox Chinese Film Development Award, which includes a cash grant of $13,000 (HK$100,000) and a first-look deal with FIP.


“We believe there’s a wealth of


unrealised film-makers in China,” said FIP president Sanford Pan- itch. “One of the goals of Fox International Productions is about finding this talent and introduc- ing them to the rest of the world.”


The Works Distribution has picked up all UK rights on Morgan Spurlock’s Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. The deal was struck by The Works CEO Laurence Gornall and Content Film president Jamie Carmichael. Spurlock will attend the UK premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest on June 8. Wendy Mitchell

Claustrofobia in Cannes Italy-based producer Jordan Stone is in Cannes with Dutch indie outfit SNOOOEP Entertainment with their first outing, Claustrofobia, a dark thriller set in Amsterdam. An Italian release is scheduled for later this year. SNOOOEP is a new Dutch independent production company set up by Edvard van’t Wout and commercials veteran Thed Lenssen. Claustrofobia is the feature debut of director Bobby Boermans.


G2 chalks up two more titles UK distributor G2 Pictures has added to its Cannes deals by taking two films from Central Partnership — Second World War epic Fortress Of War (The Brest Fortress) and the $90m Nut Cracker In 3D, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky.
