Goldwyn snaps up Kaige’s Sacrifice for the US market Samuel Goldwyn Films has swooped on US rights to Chen Kaige’s revenge tale Sacrifice. VP of acquisitions Peter Goldwyn first saw the action epic when it premiered at the Berlinale and subsequently closed a deal with Easternlight Films.
Metrodome sees Darkness in the UK and Ireland Metrodome has taken UK and Irish rights to Agnieszka Holland’s In Darkness from Beta Film. The story is about a thief who helped Jewish refugees in Lvov. The deal was negotiated by head of acquisitions and production James Brown and Andreas Rothbauer for Beta Film. Sony Pictures Classics has taken US rights.
George Lucas doc travels UK-based sales and financing company Salt has confirmed more sales on Alexandre Philippe’s documentary The People Vs George Lucas to France to Initiative Cinema One (a division of Bac Films), Japan to Fine Films and Germany to Capelight. Wrekin Hill already acquired for North America, the UK, Australia and South Africa. Kinosmith has Canada.
Fortissimo goes to NY with Maisie
BY LIZ SHACKLETON Fortissimo Films will handle international sales and WME domestic on Red Crown Produc- tions’ What Maisie Knew, set to star Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgard and Steve Coogan. An adaptation of the Henry
James novel set in contemporary New York, the comedy drama will be directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the directing duo behind The Deep End and Suture. Production is scheduled to start in New York in August. Fortissimo is introducing the
project to buyers in Cannes, while WME’s Graham Taylor and Mark Ankner are representing domestic rights for the film. Fortissimo’s executive VP of sales and acquisi- tions Winnie Lau negotiated with Red Crown’s principals and WME. Written by Nancy Doyne and
Carroll Cartwright, the story centres on a six-year-old girl caught up in the bitter divorce of her mother, a rock-and-roll icon, and her art-dealer father. Moore stars as Maisie’s mother,
Coogan as her father and Skars- gard as Moore’s new husband.
Minerva presents crime, comedy
BY SHERI JENNINGS Minerva Pictures Group comes to Cannes with Giuseppe Gagliardi’s Tatanka and Italian box-office hit What A Beautiful Day, which has earned $52m — the top grossing Italian film of all time. Tatanka is adapted from a
short story by Gomorrah author Roberto Saviano. This film is about a champion boxer who fights his way out of the mafia. Minerva Classics also has the restored Il Conformista.

BY SARAH COOPER Icon Australia has picked up theatrical distribution rights for Australia and New Zealand to Cin- emaNX’s motorcycle documen- tary TT3D: Closer To The Edge, with plans for an October release. The deal came ahead of Cannes,
where CinemaNX is launching international sales on the project. The documentary — narrated by Jared Leto — about the Isle of
Man’s famous TT motorcycle race has already taken $1.3m (£825,000) after four weeks’ release in the UK. Icon Australia’s COO Greg
Hughes said: “This exhilarating documentary will offer viewers a thrill-laden 3D insight into the sights and sounds of this historic event. [The film] will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable cinematic experiences of 2011.”

World War, the untitled film is scheduled to start shooting before the end of the year. Cast is still being finalised. One of Hong Kong’s leading action directors, Chan recently directed Universe’s City Under Siege, which the com-
pany has now sold to North Amer- ican distributor FUNimation. Universe is also lining up a
$4.5m horror title — about an exorcist — from the Pang brothers, and has sealed a North American deal with Grindstone Entertain- ment on the brothers’ 3D horror The Child’s Eye. Also on its slate is Modern Love
Story, directed by Patrick Kong. Herman Yau is also preparing a project for the company.

Yan Ni and Collin Chou, the film follows a young scholar and his servant, who are transported into the fantasy world of a mural. The film, which is undergoing a lengthy post-production process
to tie up high-end special effects, is produced by Beijing-based Enlight Pictures, the film arm of Wang Changtian’s TV production company Enlight Media Group. Golden Network’s slate also
includes animation Seefood, hor- ror film Forbidden, The Piano In A Factory, martial-arts comedy Gal- lants and Thai title The Kick. The company is also selling Fox Inter- national Productions’ The Butcher, The Chef And The Swordsman.

Aselton climbs Black Rock The Freebie writer-director Katie Aselton will direct and star alongside Lake Bell and Kate Bosworth in the all-girl thriller Black Rock, which Submarine is representing here for worldwide sales. Mark Duplass wrote the screenplay from a story by Aselton, and the pair — who previously collaborated on The Puffy Chair — will serve as executive producers.
