Dear Mark, Unfortunately, you

only provided the coat patterns of the parents and not the par- ents colors - all I can tell you is that you will have a foal that should carry both coat patterns of the parents. This is often called a “Paintaloosa”. - Prism

Dear Prism, I have a dark palo-

mino mare that I am thinking of breeding. I have a couple

stallions in mind and was won- dering what colors I might end up with. The mare I have is out of a sorrel stallion and his par- ents were sorrel and chestnut. The mare’s dam is a palomino out of a bay and palomino. I was thinking of breeding her to a dark palomino, the first dark palomino stallion is out of a palomino stud and a sorrel mare, the 2nd stallion I was thinking of breeding to is out of a palomino stud and a brown mare, what colors could I end up with?? The other stallion I was considering is a bay and he is out of a palomino stallion and a brown mare, what colors could I get there? Thank you Carissa Hahn, submitted via HorseGazette.com

Dear Carissa, Since all Palomi-

nos are sorrel/chestnut (which are the same genetically) with one dilute gene, crossing two Palominos will result in Sorrel, Palomino or Cremello (a sorrel horse with two dilute genes). Crossing a Palomino on a Bay adds the color possibilities of Black, Bay or Buckskin into the mix. From your description of the Bay’s color background we know he is not homozygous for black and could produce sor- rels. We also know he does not carry a dilute gene or he would be a buckskin and not a Bay. - Prism
