COLLABORATION SOFTWARE Only a minority of IT professionals believes that collaboration software delivers any substantial benefit, according to a study by IT analyst company Forrester Research. The survey of 2,500 IT professionals from around the


world found that 64% believe that collaboration tools provide ‘limited to no benefits’. Roughly the same proportion believe that the only


ways in which collaboration software might benefit an organisation is reducing the need for employee travel and improving internal corporate communications. According to Forrester, this neglects their potential role in product development and launch. Strangely, analyst TJ Keitt suggested that the way


to get more value from collaboration tools was to adopt more of them. “The tipping point for gaining benefits related to flexible working styles is after a business deploys four or five collaboration technologies,” Keitt said.


INFORMATION SECURITY Auditors are often underwhelmed by the security precautions of the companies they audit, according to a poll by security firm Thales and privacy experts the Ponemon Institute. The study, which polled 500 auditors, found that


fewer than a third believe that the companies they audit are ‘proactive’ in managing privacy and data protection risks. Around half of the respondents reported that most


companies they audit suffer ‘serious deficiencies’ in information security, or have failed security compliance requirements in the past.


ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE Analyst company Gartner says that enterprise architecture practitioners are becoming more focused on business strategy than on IT management. “We are finding that the majority of EA practitioners


are aspiring to leverage EA to enable business value, growth and transformation, not only to drive IT decisions,” said analyst Betsy Burton. “While this has been a vision for EA for many for years, we are now

hearing many clients clearly voice this same vision and aspiration of EA.” “If your organisation is still thinking about EA as an


IT-only discipline or developing an IT-focused guidance, you are in the minority of your peers,” she added. This may be the case, but even by Gartner’s own


estimates EA is still primarily an activity for the IT department. In early 2011, just 9% of EA ‘efforts’ were supported as a collaboration between business and IT. That proportion will increase to 30% by 2016, Gartner predicts.


SAP APPLICATION PERFORMANCE Nearly every SAP user organisation believes that issues affecting the performance of their applications pose a financial risk, according to a survey of 588 SAP customers by Compuware and Pierre Audoin Consultants. Happily, a considerable majority of respondents (71%) said they were either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the availability of their SAP systems. The proportion was slightly lower for system response times (57%). Roughly half of the respondents rated their ability to


detect, troubleshoot and even predict performance issues as either good or very good. The survey report’s authors saw these findings as


evidence that many organisations need supplementary application performance management tools. “Although the figures look positive, about 30% of the companies are not satisfied with the performance,” they wrote. However, that proportion includes the unreported number of respondents who said they were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.
