Paul’s particular brand of what he calls ‘super-realism’ owes something to his admiration for such 20th Century American realists as Chuck Close and Norman Rockwell. As a child he was introduced to wildlife art which made a huge impact on him, and when he adds his lifelong fascination with the surrealists into the mix, we begin to grasp how the multiple elements of his style have come together. “I love Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher; the former has influenced me with his incredible imagination and distinctive use of colour and the latter with his amazing draughtsmanship in the face of an impossible world,” he says.
