The pieces in the Believe collection are part of a wider series which Danielle calls ‘the dreamers’. Her mother, who she describes as her first and greatest teacher, once advised her that paintings should never reveal everything, but that the artist should always hold something back. These words of wisdom still ring true and consequently she often leaves enigmatic open spaces within a composition, for the viewer’s eye to rest and dream. The series was born after Danielle had been travelling and painting in Spain, most memorably in Cadaques where Dali lived after falling in love with the light. The dreamlike quality of the blue horizons, sea and sky blending in shimmering shades of turquoise and cerulean worked their way into her world. These works are loosely painted with colours blending and dancing together, but often have a rooted sense either through the inclusion of bamboo or a vase. As Danielle puts it, “sometimes a dreamer needs a grounding force so they can travel upwards endlessly.”
Danielle has recently returned from an inspirational journey through Cambodia, Laos and Thailand where she spent time painting with children in local orphanages and absorbing the colours and contours of the exotic landscape.
