About This Issue
“‘For behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the LORD. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.’ Now these are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah.”
–Jeremiah 30:3-4 NKJV
Who could believe this prophecy would ever be fulfilled as Israel languished for two thousand years—known by a pagan name, Palestine—and her People were scattered to the four corners of the earth, persecuted, hunted, outcast, and repeatedly massacred? As Jack Kinsella notes in his article, Raising a Nation, Reviving a Holy Language, “'Who hath heard such a thing?' Of all the generations that have ever lived from Isaiah to May 14, 1948—only this generation can answer, 'We have.' And for the first time in 23 centuries, we can hear it in Hebrew.“
Providing the “pure language” as spoken of by the prophet Zephaniah, Hebrew is an integral element of the miraculous restoration of the nation of Israel, giving a unifying voice to the returning exiles, “that they all may call on the name of the LORD, to serve Him with one accord” (Zephaniah 3:9 NKJV).

In this issue, you will meet Eliezer Ben-Yehudah, the father of modern Hebrew, who, nearly one hundred years prior to Israel regaining statehood, followed an inexplicable drive to single- handedly revive this ancient language, with an inner knowing that it was essential for the reestablishment of the Nation.
Some may question, Why Hebrew? Why not Russian, Spanish, or English as the national language to unify the returning Jewish People? As you will discover in this issue, there is no other language that expresses the heart of God or the Word of God, as it is the Holy tongue in which He chose to reveal Himself. As Jonathan Bernis explains, there is an added dimension of intimacy and power in speaking God’s own Word in His original language.
