New heavy equipment storage building

The wear and tear and maintenance issues on heavy duty equipment vehicles during winter operations can be very costly to an airport when vehicles are running almost 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are left outside during extreme weather conditions. The shed, constructed by Cormode & Dickson, will store the snow removal equipment including the snow- blower and three combination plow-truck and sweeper units.

FILL THE BOOT

The Maloney family from Vernon, who just returned home from a fl ight, made a donation to the Air- port’s Fill the Boot campaign before picking up their luggage. Airport Operations Specialists, including Don Glavin (kneeling) and Kevin Vleeming raise funds throughout the year for Muscular Dystrophy, a charity of choice of fi refi ghters across Canada since 1954. Muscular Dystrophy Canada is supported by more than 600 Fire Departments and Associations across Canada, who currently raise over $2.8 million dollars annually – for a total of $64.1 million since 1954.

The Kelowna Flying Club and COPA Flight 36 Okanagan recently hosted the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association national “COPA for Kids” Aviation program. The COPA for Kids program is a free aviation program which gives young people between the ages of 7 and 17 the sample of fl ying in a light plane, and those fortunate enough to be sitting “up front” with the pilot, the experi- ence of perhaps taking control of the aircraft and getting a feel for what it is like to be a pilot. Most participating kids have never before been up in a light aircraft or in any aircraft, and therefore the COPA for Kids program has become an important catalyst in steering young people towards possible careers in aviation or aerospace.

This year just over 50 boys and girls took part in the one day event and many families wrote in to express their gratitude. Kelowna International Airport is very proud to be a part of this event. A special thank you goes out to the event organizers, the pilots who volunteered their time, and Nav Canada for their support.

WINTER 2010 29

Airport expansion receives recognition!

On November 12, the Airport was rec- ognized by the 2009 Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board at their annual Com- mercial Building Awards. Airport Director, Sam Samaddar, was proud to accept the award for Excellence in Renovation and Addition of a Commercial Building.

The recognition was received for the expansion to the south end of the terminal which was unveiled in May 2008. The airport terminal was expanded from 22,000 feet to 110,405 feet to better serve passengers. A new pre-board screening area was added which increased from the previous two to four security lines which has since decreased the long line-ups the airport previously experienced during peak travel times. Additional seating in the departures lounge was added as well as a new full service White Spot Restaurant. The Wine Shoppe was relocated to the departures area and a satellite Kelowna Art

Gallery and a new Family Wishing Well area was added.

Time off due to work related injuries Kelowna Airport staff recently celebrated

fi ve years, or 1,825 days, without any lost time for work related injuries. The last incident was on November 9, 2004 and ‘knock on wood’ there hasn’t been an incident since that has caused any City of Kelowna Airport staff member to take a day off for a work related injury.
