New play area to “wow” families
PLANS have been drawn up to create a “wow factor” play area to attract families to Cobtree Manor Park, near Aylesford. The estate charity committee is being urged to spend up to £250,000 on the children's play area from its £1.4m permanent en- dowment. Charity Commission approval would be needed for the release of funds. A report by Maid-
stone Council, which manages the park in Forstal Road on behalf of the trustees, said families with children rarely visited it as there is not a great deal on offer for them. A bespoke play area with a “wow factor”, which is relevant to
There could soon be more attractions for young families to enjoy in the park
the park and its history, is needed, the report added. A unique design has been drawn up, based on the theme of the former Cobtree Zoo, which was established by Sir Garrard Tyr- whitt-Drake, 12-times mayor of Maidstone. The zoo was enjoyed by thousands of visitors between 1934 and 1959, when it closed. A charitable trust was set up for the Cobtree estate in 1952. After
Sir Garrard died childless in 1964, his estate was bequeathed to Maidstone inhabitants for their enjoyment. A separate report to the estate committee said the proposals
would be in the park's best interests and boost visitor numbers and enjoyment of the park, thus meeting the charity's principal objec- tive.
Other facilities envisaged under a "master plan" include a picnic
area, hard path network, nature trails, cafe/visitor centre, trim trail, sculptures, repairs to the original llama house, use of the old ele- phant house as an art workshop and improved car parking. These further works, if approved, could be funded through a sep-
arate account. Heritage Lottery funds and other grants would also be sought.

Knocking spots off beauty competition
BEAUTY contestant Chelsea Courtney is dotty about her nan’s blue and white spotted dress. So much so that she wore the
vintage outfit when she lined up in the regional heat of the Miss Eng- land competition. Chelsea, a concession manager at
Topshop in Maidstone, needed to model something recycled as part of the contest. So she chose the polka dot dress which her grand- mother Barbara Asquith (72) wore at one of her six weddings. Chelsea, who attendedAylesford
Sport College and lives in Lordswood, was looking forward to being photographed in a range of outfits, including the wedding dress, in the south east heat at Guildford on March 17. Pictures of the contestants were
being posted on the Miss England website for voters to choose their favourite, with the top five going forward to the semi-finals in June.
