Support the campaign here
Continued from page 1 Significant contributions and support have been promised to the Downs Mail if the public cam- paign takes off. “Please be generous to ensure Maid- stone’s won- derful battle to
retain
these key services can still be won,” said Dennis Fowle, chairman of Maidstone Action for Services in Hospital (MASH).
£100,000 was raised ** When the Downs Mail ran an
appeal fund a decade ago for Jade’s Crossing on the A249 at Detling, more than £100,000 was raised, much from events and collections by supporters, especially young people and in schools. “It would be wonderful to see such support now,” said Mr Fowle, who was editor of the Downs Mail then and led that campaign.
“It is our last big chance be- Church toilet sexual assault
fore they are switched so far away to Pembury in September – with all the dangers for Maid- stone area women and children and costly inconven- ience for so many fami- lies. “We are grateful for promised donations
– but we will need much more public support if the case is to go ahead.”
My contribution is made to support a judicial review of the
Secretary of State’s December decision on women’s and chil- dren’s services at Maidstone Hospital and alternatively to MASH for its campaign to retain core services in Maidstone Hospital.

EXPERIENCE
A MAN who admitted sexually assaulting an 11 year-old boy in a Maidstone church toilet and attempting to sexually assault another 8 year old boy was given an indeterminate sentence at Maidstone Crown Court. Allan David Reginald Martin (22) previously of the Goodwins,
TunbridgeWells, admitted the two charges and also breaching his Sexual Offences Prevention Order. The court heard how he had joined a Maidstone church and in September 2010 sexually assaulted a boy in the toilets there, using a game to get the child to comply with his depraved wishes. Judge Patience ordered that he serve a minimumof two years, be-
fore he can apply for parole, but will only be released once it is de- termined that he is no longer a danger to the community. He will also have to sign on the sexual offenders register for life. Investigating officer DC Laura Martin said: “We are pleased with
today’s result, which has resulted in this dangerous young man no longer representing a threat to other children. “I would like to thank the officers who assisted in this complex
case and also the victims and their families for their courage and support, without whom we would not have secured this convic- tion.”
Acting for sobriety STUDENTS from St Simon Stock Catholic School, Maid- stone, acted their way to third place in a Kent alcohol educa- tion drama competition. Students researched, wrote, produced and performed short plays based on their lives or ex- periences. They performed to other students and local com- munity to highlight the risks of alcohol – hoping to encourage young people to think about their lifestyles and to reject peer prssure. The contest was won by
Hugh Christie Technology Col- lege, Tonbridge.
Drink drive ban A MAIDSTONE woman pleaded guilty to driving a 57- reg Renault Megane in Palace Avenue, Maidstone, while twice over the legal drink-drive limit. Nathalia Magda Arevelo (31)
of Stafford Gardens, had a read- ing of 86mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, above the legal limit of 35mg, when the incident took place in February. Arevelo was given a 22- month driving ban, reduced by three months on completion of an approved driving course, and was fined £200. She in- curred costs of £100.
