ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2010 AND PLANS FOR 2011 SUBTHEME 2.1 GLOBALIZATION AND MARKETS

PROJECT 1: AFRICAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT (AGRODEP) MODELING CONSORTIUM IFPRI Team:

Project Duration: Objectives of project

October 2010 – October 2015

AGRODEP is collaboration among IFPRI, the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in East and Central Africa (ASARECA), the West African Council on Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD), and the Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Policy Network (FANRPAN). The goal of AGRODEP is to position African experts to take a leading role in both (1) the study of strategic development questions facing African countries as a group and (2) the broader agricultural growth and policy debate, which traditionally has been dominated by external actors and concerns.

Research Approach The Modeling Consortium pursues three essential activities:

 Promoting access to and use of state-of-the-art economic modeling tools and improving the quality, relevance, and timeliness of data to meet the demand for high-quality, locally based research that contributes to evidence- based policy and strategy planning and implementation.

 Facilitating access to existing data sources for research and policy analysis, developing methodologies and standards to improve the quality of available datasets, identifying and bridging data gaps, and complementing sources to raise their local content and relevance.

 Supporting collaboration among leading African scientists and their peers outside Africa and building a dynamic research community that can respond to the emerging and long-term needs of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme‘s (CAADP) growth and poverty reduction agenda.

Progress, Research Results, Major Research Findings in 2010

The initiative was launched in 2010 with an inception workshop organized in Dakar, Senegal on October 28-29, 2010. Most of the work in 2010 focused on defining governance mechanisms, identifying members of scientific advisory board and the steering committee, outlining project goals and objectives, selecting members, and organizing the inception workshop. Although the initiative is still taking shape, AGRODEP now has thirty members, researchers from Africa who were selected among over 100 applicants and who will benefit from the Consortium‘s resources and will contribute to its further development.

Plans for 2011

AGRODEP plans for 2011 are divided into three components: i) data, ii) modeling, iii) networking. The 2011 plan for the data component of AGRODEP include data stocktaking, communication with data sources, identification of data experts, development of data portal, developing standards and protocols, and data warehousing. In terms of the modeling component, AGRODEP plans to develop a library of models that will include multi- and single country CGE models, multi-market PE models, partial equilibrium models, econometric models, and supply/demand models. In terms of the networking component AGRODEP plans to increase the membership to fifty members, design and launch a grant program for members, design and launch a quarterly bulletin and discussion paper series, and organize a meeting and training for members.
