It is inscribed and dated on the reserve of the frame (translated from French): Drawn by / Louis David. In / less than twenty minutes / and on his knees, in the / prisons of the 4 nations, 3 / messidor an 3 d.l.R.
DRAWINGS WEEK AUCTIONS
PARIS auctioneers holding dedicated sales or sale sections of works on paper include Christie’s who stage theirs on April 1 after their Château de Gourdon blockbuster. It will focus on French and Italian drawings including a François Boucher drawing long thought to depict Madame de Pompadour, estimated at €100,000-150,000. ArtCurial hold a 19th century and Old Master drawings sale on March 30. The
next day Piasa offer Old Master, 19th century and Modern drawings to include the Jacques-Louis David portrait shown above, and one of Théodore Géricault’s figure sketches for The Raft of the Medusa, his grand painting now in the Louvre. In pen, ink and brown wash, it is guided at €40,000-60,000.

Above: Didier Ltd, who specialises in 20th century artist-designed jewellery, will be offering this rare 18ct gold and enamelled suite of pendant, ring and earrings by the pop artist Joe Tilson at PAD. It is priced at £55,000. Although originally intended as a limited edition of 25, only two sets were ever produced and this is the sole example with its original box which has gold hinges and is an integral part of the ensemble.
