34 19th March 2011 art market Contihued from page 33

£10,000-15,000 estimate, it was offered here at £4000-6000 and was knocked down at £7500. Making slight less was the Ouless

painting The Brig Homely of Jersey Unloading off Le Banc de Paspebiac, Quebec. The 18 x 11½in (46 x 30cm) oil on

canvas had as its main focus a ship flying the Merchant Marine’s Red Ensign, and in the background was the Le Boutillier Brothers’ shed on the wharf and the Catholic Church on the hill beyond. Again, having failed to sell in

September against a £20,000-30,000 estimate, it sold here to a private buyer from the Channel Islands at £6500 against a £7000-10,000 estimate. Assuming it will be re-exported to the Channel Islands, it will escape the extra import VAT charge. One of the strongest bidding

competitions in the sale came for a Channel Islands view by William Arthur Toplis (1875-1914). The Sheffield-born artist who moved

to Sark after being captivated by the island and its coastline when he first went there on holiday in 1883, is said, only partially in jest, to have painted every square-inch of the island. In 1908, he published a lavish picture

book illustrating 21 engravings of Sark based on his paintings, some of which had been exhibited at the Royal Academy. Most of his works were small and

highly detailed records of the island, but this 2ft 2in x 3ft (66 x 92cm) oil on canvas, entitled Gouliet Channel, Sark, was somewhat larger and broader in its approach than most of his output. Signed and dated 1895, it was in good

condition and, against a £800-1200 estimate, it drew considerable interest before it was knocked down to the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery at £6000. This was the second highest auction

price for the artist, only just behind the £6500 seen for Creux Harbor, Sark, which was also part of the Appleby collection and sold at the single-owner sale back in November. Overall, the 238 Appleby lots at the

Interiors sale saw 187 get away for a hammer total of £206,510.

‘£500 Ruskin’ is £11,000 star

FROM the Stones of Venice to the lakes of Switzerland – few Victorian draughtsmen were as prolific on their travels as John Ruskin (1819-1900). As such, there is an ample supply of Ruskin drawings around and, since buyers can

be choosy, price is highly sensitive to both condition and quality. This view, above, from Fiesole in the hills above Florence had the Ruskin signature

in the bottom left and came to Lawrences (16% buyer’s premium) of Bletchingley, Surrey from a local consignor looking to sell a number of small items. The 6 x 12in (15 x 30cm) pencil and watercolour sketch was a typically naturalistic

landscape and, while it was in good condition and the auctioneers felt it was likely a fully attributable work, they were cautious with their estimate and offered it with a £300-500 pitch. At the sale on February 1-3, the market reacted positively and it easily surpassed

these levels. Coming down to a battle between two bidders on the phone, both thought to be London dealers, it was finally knocked down at £11,000.
