Council work rewarded

Looe Town Council has made a successful bid for re-accreditation as a Quality Town Council.

The town has satisfied a wide range of tests which have become more rigorous since it first achieved Quality Town status four years ago.

Looe mayor Jimmy Dingle said: ‘The Quality Town award recognises that we are well placed to pick up the best opportunities, working with the whole town.

‘This award is a recognition of the hard work of the clerk Anne Frith

and deputy mayor Brian Galipeau who brought the application to a very successful conclusion.’

Sow now for early pickings

If you want to harvest early tomatoes then you need to get a head-start in sowing.

Tomatoes destined for a heated greenhouse can be sown now. Though outdoor tomatoes don’t need to be sown until April or even May.

For a heated greenhouse you can do no better than stick to the old tried and well tested varieties such as Alicante and Moneymaker. Or try one of the plum tomatoes such as Roma which are tough and disease resistant.

Both these produce big trusses of medium-sized fruits and are reasonably trouble and disease free.

Sow tomatoes in seed trays either in the greenhouse, or indoors in a propagator. If you use the latter remove them as soon as the seedlings have produced a couple of pairs of true leaves. This will prevent them getting leggy.

If sown indoors keep in a reasonably warm place and make sure they don’t dry out. When they are big enough prick out into 3in pots to grow on until they are about 8in tall.

Plants which are destined for a heated greenhouse but started off indoors won’t need hardening off, just transfer them to a permanent greenhouse bed, grow-bags or large pots. If grown in the greenhouse, simply plant out when they are large enough.

It is essential to keep the soil moist at all times, so frequent watering is necessary especially with grow-bags. Feed with a tomato fertiliser every time you water.

Humidity can be provided by misting the plants with water occasionally, which will help the fruit to set. Shake the plants gently when they are in flower to aid pollen distribution.

As the plants grow nip out any side shoots and when the plants have reached the top of the greenhouse , you can ‘stop’ them by pinching out their tops. You may have to do this more than once if more stray shoots appear.

The greenhouse temperature should never fall below 50°F at night, the optimum temperature would be around 55°F. As it will be warmer during the day, especially if the sun is out, ventilate by opening the lights, but shut them at night.
