BE A FAIRTRADE SHOW OFF! BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
GONE are the days of searching all around Hoole and Chester to find a solitary jar of Fairtrade coffee The range has grown and how! There are now over 3000 products to choose from, everything from cotton pant to footballs now bear the FAIRTRADE mark.
Last year amazing Fairtrade supporters got the UK making over one million and one swaps to Fairtrade products during Fairtrade Fortnight. In schools, on high streets, in work canteens, the message that the people of Britain want a fair deal for the producers behind the products they buy was made loud and clear.
This year’s “Fairtrade Fortnight” takes place from February 28 to March 13; a 2 week period held every year helps spread the word about Fairtrade and the benefits it brings to farmers and workers in developing countries. Buying Fairtrade products is a commitment everyone can make to challenge unfair international trading rules. 50% of all shoppers now recognise the FAIRTRADE mark and with the increased awareness of issues surrounding trade, aid and debt 2011 is an ideal opportunity to find out what Fairtrade means to the 5 million people – farmers, workers and their families – who benefit from Fairtrade.
This is why Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 is encouraging the nation to show off about buying Fairtrade. You can show off Fairtrade any way you want and explain why Fairtrade matters. By showing off the importance of Fairtrade to producers, the benefits of the Fairtrade premium for local communities and the change Fairtrade brings, we’re giving more people in the UK more reasons to choose Fairtrade.
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
Recently a unique partnership between Fairtrade International and the Alliance for Responsible Mining, combined their expertise to enable artisanal and small-scale miners to improve their livelihoods. This has resulted in Fairtrade and Fairmined certified gold, the world’s first independent ethical certification system for gold, this will offer you the guarantee of a product which has been responsibly mined.
It’s important to know how your most treasured pair of earrings or your showpiece necklace started their journey. Important because all Fairtrade and Fairmined gold is mined from small-scale and artisanal mines in a way that seeks to reduce dependence on harmful chemicals. Good news for mining communities in South America and good news for the people who live and mine there.
Look carefully and you’ll find the Fairtrade and Fairmined stamp on the inside of every piece. Infact there are rumours that William and Kate might chose to use fairtrde gold wedding rings, if they were to chose Fairtrade gold it would send out a clear message: we care about the world and we are in touch with issues that matter. I for one would be very proud of them if they did, and it would make me wave my Union Jack on April 29th as the wedding would have special significance for me and millions of artisanal miners around the world.
Finally did you know that Chester is a Fairtrade City; in fact back in January 2002 Chester City Council in partnership with Cheshire Development Education Centre attained the status of Britain’s First Fair Trade City. So we the residents of Hoole and Chester have no excuse, so make sure you: • Buy fairly traded products as part of your shopping. If you cannot find a fairly traded product that you want ASK! Shops may be unaware of the demand for these items.
• Buy Fairtrade coffee or tea and locally produced milk for meetings that you organise or attend.
• Choose a fairly traded craft item, for the next gift that you buy. • Get your favourite cafè or your workplace to switch to fairly traded refreshments.
