Perennial’s vision is to be the automatic first port of call in times of need for all those who are working in, have worked in or retired from horticulture, and their spouses or partners, and when someone turns to them for help, their needs are met individually.
Rooted in the 19th century, the charity has moved with the times as both horticulture and the needs of its people have changed, by providing money and services, and by ensuring people get the help they need from government departments, public and private organisations that are there to assist.
You can help Perennial by becoming a volunteer, join the Friends scheme, by sending a donation – or by buying gifts from their catalogue. It all helps a very good cause.

Mother’s Day all wrapped up
From dramatic bougainvillea and passionflowers to more traditional planted baskets, Plants4Presents have a whole range of beautiful plants to suit every taste, and every plant is delivered in bloom at its very best. Mother and daughter team Isobel and Emily Rae started Plants4Presents in 2004 and know it’s so important to get the details right. “When a plant is a gift it needs to look fantastic on the day it arrives and for many more to come,” says Emily. Plants4Presents specialise in plants as gifts and have a huge range of over 70 flowering, fruiting and edible plants for Mother’s Day. As Mother’s Day is later this year there are even more flowering plants available. Call the customer service line 0845 226 8026 or go to

The origins of Mother’s Day
Mothering Sunday is a Christian festival celebrated throughout Europe and falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The other names attributed to it include Simnel Sunday, Refreshment Sunday and Rose Sunday. Simnel Sunday is named after the practice of baking Simnel cakes to celebrate the reuniting of families during the austerity of Lent.
During the 16th century, people returned to their mother church for a service on Laetare Sunday. This was either a large local church, or more often the nearest Cathedral. Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone “a-mothering”.
In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since in other days they were prevented by conflicting working hours.
