gray mare bred to perlino paint stud COLOR WHEEL WITH PRISM
Dear Prism, I have a black mare
that I will be breeding to a gray stallion. The mare’s sire was chestnut and her dam was black. The stallion’s sire was gray and his dam was bay. What are the odds of this match producing a gray foal? – Sub- mitted by Christine Jones via

Dear Christine, First there is a 50%
chance of the foal being a gray regardless the color it is born. As far as “Base color” we know your mare is heterozygous for black (carries one red and one

black gene) and we know the stallion as gray and his dam was bay. So we will treat both parents as being heterozygous for black. That said the foal from this cross could be Sor- rel/Chestnut, Bay or Black with a 50% chance of turning gray as it grows. - Prism
Dear Prism, I have a grey mare
who is listed on her papers as being “grey or roan” as a foal. Her sire was also grey, and he and my mare both seemed to have the same greying gene-
they greyed progressively over their lives. My mare’s dam was a roan.
I am breeding her to
a chocolate palomino stallion. Can you help me know what colors to expect? Thanks! – Al- lison Wilshere, Glen Falls, NY submitted via HorseGazette. com.
Dear Allison, Not knowing the
birth color of you mare and having a limited knowledge of her sire’s base color poses a problem in answering your question. We don’t know if she could be black based or red
based or even if she was born a “Roan”. We do know that a Palomino is homozygous for the red gene regardless of the shade of red. So if we make the assumption that your mare is heterozygous for black (one red and one black gene) then the foal colors could be Sor- rel/Chestnut, Palomino, Bay, Buckskin or Black/Smokey Black. The foal will also have a minimum of a 50% chance of being gray. - Prism
