CC: How long would it take to imple- ment a sustainable design strategy in any given camp? PA: It depends on the strategy. Renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic solar panels and wind turbines, can be installed relatively quickly as they may be construct- ed as stand-alone structures.

CC: What type of economic impact will these sustainable design strategies have for camps? PA: Renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines, coupled with geothermal heating and cooling can significantly reduce energy costs, depending on loads. As an example, an environmental learning centre that we recently designed has a geothermal heating and cooling sys- tem and a well-insulated envelope.

CC: For camps with a small budget, how can small ecologically sustain- able building changes be made? PA: As a beginning, consider a phased replacement of inefficient lighting and/or mechanical and electrical equipment; on-site treatment of stormwater such, as a

raingarden; and/or minimizing light pollu- tion by reducing and replacing existing lighting fixtures with cutoff fixtures.

CC: What are some of the ways camp owners/directors can make ecologi- cally sustainable building an effective teaching tool? PA: As part of a sustainability master plan, we have worked closely with clients to inte- grate a sustainability interpretive plan with the overall camp program plan that includes website content, exhibits, handout materials and programs for campers and their families.

CC: How do you hope this will change the face of camps today? PA: By incorporating sustainable design strategies, coupled with interpretation, I hope campers will develop an understand- ing of how development impacts our envi- ronment. The following quote by conser- vationist Baba Dioum expresses the poten- tial: “In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand, We will understand only what we are taught.” CC
