ART & CULTURE IN

KELOWNA By Chris Bose, Artistic Director, Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art

What does the term ‘culture’ mean to you? Is it enjoying the arts, performing, visual or literary? Is it something we love to see and participate in? Is it a larger ethos or a feeling that a community gives you when you enter it? Does it engage you and connect you with people within the community?

Even though art is all around us, Kelowna, BC, has a downtown cultural corridor that was once the centre of the Okanagan’s fruit packing industry. This six-block area is a creative hub of musicians, artists and performers. The Kelowna Art Gallery, the Kelowna Museum, and The Rotary Centre for the Arts, at 421 Cawston, is an especially inviting area, home to a 332-person theatre, artist studios, a pottery studio, a dance studio, three galleries, a music room, even a bistro.

Throughout the summer, in the downtown cultural district, there are workshops, live performances and exhibitions at the many art galleries; through the winter, exhibitions move indoors.

As a part of the cultural community here, The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, was the first artist-run centre in the Interior of British Columbia. It has since grown into a multi-faceted gallery located in the Rotary Centre for the Arts Building. The Alternator presents year- round exhibitions in all forms of media, by emerging and mid-career Canadian and international artists.

Our programming includes artist talks, exchanges, panel discussions, performances, publications, workshops and other events promoting an awareness of contemporary art. At the Alternator, we’ve had the REACT 2010 exhibition, the Wearable Art Gala, and, in the coming year, some very innovative and interactive ways of exploring Art beyond the gallery, out in the community, with “Tag You’re It.”
