rummers are a breed apart from other musicians. The butt of many a cruel musician’s joke, drummers are nevertheless generally an open-hearted bunch who clearly enjoy a mutual love of hitting lovely big loud things with assorted sticks and mallets. Compared to lead guitarists, whose egomaniacal tendencies and Schadenfreude towards their fellow string-slingers renders them less capable of sharing then a bunch of chimps let loose in a banana grove, drummers’ share an almost tribal sense of loyalty and a genuine interest in their fellow drummer’s playing and choice of equipment. This luxurious - looking tome by DW Drums’ European Artist Relations manager David Phillips shows the world from the drum throne of some of the world’s best drummers, which you have to admit is a fairly unique and exclusive perspective! Packed with terrifi c colour images shot on the world’s biggest festivals and stadium gigs this book conveys the excitement, energy and beauty of the drummer’s art. Under stage lighting the drum kit often looks more like an elaborate sculpture as light refl ects of dozens of shiny cymbals and mountainous stacks of complicated looking hardware but equally compelling is the concentration refl ected on the faces of the drummers themselves. Whether drenched from head to toe in sweat or else seemingly lost in an apparent trance like state each drummer’s unique personality comes across so powerfully that your ears are practically ringing from the moment that you turn the fi rst page. This book is a great treat for anyone interested in drumming. PM

hilst most hard rock and HM fans are aware of Motörhead and its notorious leader Lemmy Kilminster, the man himself
is something of an enigmatic fi gure whose remarkable physical ability to withstand the demands of virtually half a century in rock and roll’s fast lane almost threatens to overshadow his musical achievements. However, this fi lm demonstrates that Lemmy’s down to earth personality is probably the key to his survival; the man is probably the most grounded rock star you’ve ever seen! Where the majority of fl y on the wall rockumentaries revel in the opulence and sheer decadence enjoyed by the extremely rich and famous, as far Lemmy is concerned the trappings of fame mostly appear to consist of a cluttered apartment near LA’s sunset strip that is crammed from fl oor to ceiling with various tour ephemera and his treasured collection of war memorabilia (Lemmy doesn’t even appear to drive, let alone own a fl ashy car). Surprisingly low-key for a guy with such a hell-raising reputation, Lemmy’s pin-sharp intelligence and dry humour are a stark contrast compared to his contemporaries among the US rock elite, who line up like eager puppy dogs to pay tribute to The Master.
