A more informed clientele and the changing role of the local pharmacist are just two of the reasons for Co-op’s pharmacy undergoing one of its biggest renovations in years.
Meeting clients' needs for the last 16 years at the pharmacy on 13th Avenue, head pharmacist Bob Stadnyk says the industry is moving towards a more interactive relationship with those they serve.
“We’ve streamlined our operation to the point we have the ability, the space and the time to talk to people,” said Stadnyk of the recent renovations.
The changes are more than just cosmetic, he said, with 60 per cent of renovations
being carried out behind the counter and 40 per cent in front of it so as to maximize effi ciency.
“Because of our increase in volume, we’ve found it harder and harder to talk to people and deal with their problems and concerns without them feeling rushed,” said Stadnyk.
“With the reno and revamping, we’ve made particular spots where we can talk to people as long as they want.”
The pharmacy has been totally rebuilt from the ground up to accomplish this goal, marking a dedication of Co-op to its customers who helped its business grow seven-fold in the last two decades.
“Customers want and require more information” — a major growth trend in the pharmacy trade, says Stadnyk.
“Even a generation ago, you didn’t ask too much.”
With the increase of who can write prescriptions and better patient knowledge of medications, the pharmacy business is seeing an integration of medical information, something the Co- op Pharmacy is managing.
“There is a lot more overlap as to whose job is what,” said Stadnyk.
“Once you get more time to talk to the patient, you can think of (a pharmacist) as a quarterback coordinating the whole health of the patient.”
The pharmacy renovations, says Stadnyk, will allow for additional time with clients to not only coordinate with family and specialist doctors, but to plan long-term health outcomes.
