OBRA NEWS JANUARY 2011: By Craig Widdifield

By the time you read this, the Ontario Barrel Racing Association will have officially wrapped its 2010/11 season with a spectacular banquet and awards presentation at the Quality Inn in Woodstock.

Ticket sales at this writing were the best ever for the banquet and we booked the Krysta Lee Band for live entertainment.

I’m just crossing my fingers that the weather co-operates for us to make for a great night. Also taking place that day was the election of the 2011/12 executive. More than 50 people indicated their intention to attend this so we are hoping there will be some energetic people step- ping forward to take over the reins for next sea- son.

Financially we are leaving the new team in great shape with more the triple the funds in the OBRA account to kick off next season than we had this year, so it will no doubt be a great season

with one heck of a blast off show to launch it. Speaking of shows, even if you are not step- ping up to an executive position this season we ask that you put on your thinking caps and try to come up with some new shows and venues for OBRA in 2011. Arsene Tanguay brought us back Petrolia Fair last summer and it was a great show that I am sure will grow this coming summer. We need others like that, or even private venues. Over the years we lost a number of great shows such as Carole Lampron’s at Maple Lane Quarter Horses outside of Ottawa.

We hope members will encourage old show hosts to reconsider in 2011 and approach others about the possibility.

It’s very easy under our new format to organize a show and the executive is there to help. It’s also much more reasonable. For example, under our new added money format, a show can almost pay for itself if the host is willing to kick back their holdback percentage to the show. All you need to do is attract 85 entries and over two days, you

pretty much come out even. Anyone with ques- tions about this can call me or approach me about it and I will give you the break down. Sponsors however, are a wonderful thing and an added bonus. We want to thank, from the bot- tom of our hearts, all of the 2010 season sponsors for their support and hope that they continue to support our association in the coming season as we grow ever more stronger.

We would not be where we are today and pre- senting over $10,000 in year-end saddles, buck- les, jackets an other awards without you. Mem- bers! Support our sponsors in return please! Remember to keep up to date on all barrel racing news in Ontario from all sectors on the Facebook page Barrel Racing Ontario. Be sure to “like” this page and add it to your links like the other 1,400 people from across Ontario and parts of the U.S. have! You can even set up Twitter updates as BRO is on Twitter too!

Vice President. It has been a lot of work, but I must say truly a pleasure to deal with you all this season. We had a lot of fun along the way. Presi- dent David Clingen and I will be stepping down as we committed to put our hearts and souls into the association for one season and get it back on its feet. We have accomplished that goal and now it’s time for us to focus on our personal, profes- sional and horse lives. I think David will be busy practicing on the cans and we might even see a new Clingen on the circuit next season. Myself, I have a young DHD horse I am prepping for com- petition in 2012 hopefully.

This will be my final newsletter and the ban- quet will be one of my last acts as OBRA 1st

I can’t thank you enough for all of your sup- port. On behalf of David and myself, here’s to a spectacular 2011! Best of luck to you all, and

God bless.

Once again, it’s been a pleasure to serve you all! You are truly great people as evidenced by the trials and hardships you pulled each other through this past season.
