Francesca is top St John cadet
DITTON teenager Francesca Underdown has been named Cadet of the Year for St John Ambulance Kent. Francesca, 15, will act as an ambassador for the youth membership of the thriving charity and spread the mes- sage about its vital role in saving lives. Francesca, a corpo-
ral in the Maidstone division, has been a volunteer for three years. Francesca said: “I
look forward to representing Kent over the next 12 months. “I would definitely recom-
mend volunteering to young people. You have a great chance to develop some fantastic skills that can be used in many as- pects of your life and make a valuable contribution to the community. “You can also make some
great friends as I have done.” Arecord number of cadets en-
tered the competition. Alan Maycock, deputy commissioner operations, said: ”It’s great to see so many young people putting their heart and soul into this. The tasks the fi- nalists had to under- take highlighted their presentation skills as well as their ability to think and react quickly. Francesca is a very worthy winner.” St John Ambulance
in Kent has 25 divisional head- quarters, eight training centres across the county and a thriving membership of more than 1,000 adults, youth and children. It provides first aid cover at sporting and community events and delivers a variety of health and safety and first aid courses to members of the public and companies of all sizes.

A PUBLIC exhibition will take place on the proposed develop- ment of 35 new houses on the site of the former Ditton Labora- tories. East Malling Research has agreed to sell the land to help fund its projects. Developer Millwood Designer Homes will present its proposals for Kiln Barn Road at the Ditton Com- munity Centre on Saturday, February 5, from 10amtill 2pm. Peter Bland, senior design manager for the developer, said: “East Malling Research’s fund- ing is being reduced by the Gov- ernment and so they’re having to find new income streams.” To get the maximum value for
the land, the plans do not in- clude any affordable housing. The development will replace

a redundant fruit packing busi- ness to the rear of the site. Mr Bland added: “The land is allo- cated for employment but there has been no interest in this use. There was also a traffic issue with the previous business so a residential scheme is supported by the local authority.” Mr Bland said the homes are
likely to have a traditional Ken- tish vernacular design. There may also be allotments for the use of parishioners as well as residents. The developer has al- ready made a presentation to Ditton Parish Council and local borough members. No objec- tions were raised. Millwood Designer Homes
hopes to submit a formal plan- ning application in the next few months.
