Queen of song heads for Kings Hill

CLASSICAL singing star Katherine Jenkins and a “top boy band” will be among the performers at a new summer music festival at Kings Hill. The three-day outdoor Music on

the Hill event will be staged over the weekend of June 24, 25 and 26.

Welsh stunner Katherine, who

is one of the UK’s favourite singers, will perform with the Na- tional Symphony Orchestra on Friday, June 24. She said: “I’m delighted to be headlining the very first Music on the Hill event. I’ve performed at a number of different venues over the years but it is always very spe- cial to be singing in this type of informal setting, where I can in- teract with the audience. “I hope people will come along

with their friends and family, bring a picnic and enjoy a whole host of classical music, hopefully in the Kent sunshine.” The festival, which will take place in a dedi-

cated arena near Tower Hill, has been organised by Demelza Hospice Care for Children. The full line-up has not yet been announced but

a concert by “an internationally renowned boy band” has been promised for the second date, Sat- urday, June 25. On the third day there will be a change of pace for a Demelza Sum- mer Sunday with a family atmos- phere and entertainment, children’s activities and a food festival. All profits from the weekend will

go to Demelza and The Children’s Development Trust. The event is also supported by a number of com- panies and organisations including the site development partners Lib- erty Property Trust UK and Kent County Council, which has pro- vided the venue. Demelza events co-ordinator

Sarah Marsh said: “This is such an exciting event for Demelza and we are very grateful to Liberty and KCC for their help and support in allow- ing us to stage this at Kings Hill.

“To have Katherine Jenkins performing on the

first night of Music on the Hill is a real thrill for us and we hope that the people of Kentwill enjoy the opportunity of seeing such a world class artist appearing on our stage.” Tickets for Katherine Jenkins’ concert cost £35.

Footprint snow trail leads to arrest

A TRAIL of footprints in the snow led to the arrest of a suspected thief at QuarryWood business park. Police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of theft at 11.30pm on Saturday, December 4, and seized his car. Officers had been alerted that people were seen acting suspi- ciously close to nearby stores. Police stopped a man who was get- ting into a vehicle parked nearby after following footprints from the site. The man’s footwear appeared to match the prints in the snow.

Resident loses battle over new

bus shelter A NEW bus shelter is to be in- stalled at Kings Hill, despite a resident’s campaign to prevent it being built near his house. The parish council agreed in

2008 to replace the shelter in Discovery Drive after the previ- ous one was vandalised some years previously. The project was delayed but the parish council recently confirmed that its decision to install the shel- ter had not changed. The resident, whose concerns included vandalism of the new shelter, had researched rainfall figures which he said dis- proved reported claims by a for- mer parish councillor that passengers were soaked while waiting for a bus. County Cllr Richard Long

said he had been lobbied by residents both for and against the installation of the shelter. The majority were clearly in favour of it.

Richard shells out for seaside pub

TV CHEF Richard Phillips, who runs the Hengist restaurant at Aylesford, has taken over a well-known Whitstable pub as his lat- est venture. Richard, who was previously head chef for Marco Pierre White at the Criterion, Mirabelle and Les Saveurs, has taken on an Enterprise lease at the Pearson’s Arms. The site has been refurbished by the chef, who also runs restau-

rants at Chapel Down Vineyard in Tenterden and at Tunbridge Wells. The Pearson’s Arms by Richard Phillips will be run as a community pub with a menu which focuses on produce from Kent.
