CONTENTS ILDS2011
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me how many lighting design practices there were I would be a reasonably wealthy man. I would generally mutter “Oh, about 800” before quickly changing the subject. That got me thinking that an international survey of the profession including both lighting design practices and manufacturers / distributors would be an extremely useful way to gauge the size of our industry. The lighting design profession is still relatively young compared to other design sectors so I feel passionately that this survey is a valuable tool in elevating the lighting designer to his rightful position as an important member of the design team. It puts the lighting designer on the map as it were. Amazingly the number of lighting design practices we came up with was 828 (so I wasn’t far off!). We have also included engineering practices and architectural firms with substantial lighting design departments (as evident on their websites or if their employees are members of the IALD or PLDA) - any company that has the ability to be proficient in lighting design. Of course there will be more but I feel we’ve made a good start. For ease of use (and to make our jobs at least a little bit more manageable!) we have restricted the inaugural survey to a list of 1000 manufacturers and their distributors / subsidiaries for those that responded to our requests. Of course, the survey also acts as an extremely useful directory for those involved in specifying lighting - whether it is finding a lighting designer or buying from a manufacturer. Obviously, you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs and mistakes are inevitable. If you spot an error or know that your company is not listed correctly then please let us know. If you didn’t respond to our requests this time, make sure you do next time so your correct details are included. This is an important piece of research for our industry so we will be repeating the survey every year from now on. Look out for exciting digital developments in the future... PAUL JAMES
