What DIDN’T we do?
• This year we supported fewer families due to an increase in the number of young people being referred to us with very complex needs. This meant although we cared for fewer people, the level of care was greater. In 2009/2010 we supported 245 families, (2008/2009:308), representing 3,458 bed-nights (2008/2009:3,463)
What do we want to do in 2010/2011?
• Develop a service for young adults with non-curative cancer
• In line with national healthcare priorities, increase the choice available for families and patients in where they receive Helen & Douglas House’s expert care; offering support at home, in hospital or in the hospice itself
Our aim is to be the hospice of choice for families
• We did not meet all our funding needs
• Helen & Douglas House continues to work with partners to aim for equitable financial contributions from statutory agencies for the care it provides to children and their families
• Continue to work with the NHS and other agencies from the South Central Strategic Health Authority’s network to promote and develop children’s and young adults’ palliative care
• Demonstrate leadership in the development and delivery of specialist palliative care through offering professional advice, by sharing our experience at conferences and contributing to palliative care training
• Work together with other healthcare providers to improve the choice available for age-appropriate care around the region
• Respond to the staff survey results in areas that need addressing, such as improved access to IT equipment and further recruitment of skilled volunteers to complement paid staff
• We have developed a 3 year plan to achieve a balanced budget, after taking the decision to continue investing in the specialist nature of the care being delivered by Helen & Douglas House
• Extend the number of volunteers working in all aspects of the charity, particularly within the care team in both Helen House & Douglas House
• Develop the internship programme for longer term volunteering to give a more in depth experience and help individuals pursue paid employment
• Strive to further increase income and seek additional public sector funding for specialist palliative care
• Increase sustainable income streams, through developing our regular giving programme and launching a new lottery
