06 Highlights from 2009/2010 What we aim to be
The hospice of choice for families
What did we want to do?
• Assist the children, young adults and their families who use the hospice to have a greater say in how we run the charity
• Finalise the plans, and begin building the Douglas House annexe What DID we do?
• We made great headway in establishing user groups to collect the opinions of those who use the hospice and suggestions about improvements by establishing a parent user group, re-launching our satisfaction surveys and undertaking a service evaluation
• After two generous donations, we completed the annexe which provides rooms for the family support team, training, extra storage for medical equipment, and much needed office accommodation
• We provided specialist advice to professionals looking after children and young adults in their own homes
The partner of choice for statutory, voluntary and commercial agencies
• Work in partnership to ensure that all children with life-shortening illnesses in the region, receive the right care at the right time and in the right place, and that their families and carers get the support they need, when they need it
• Our care, medical and family support teams worked closely with the various departments at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospitals, including paediatric and neonatal intensive care units and teams caring for teenagers and young adults with cancer, to improve the availability of specialist care and increase referrals to Helen & Douglas House
• The Department of Health gave £273k to support the charity’s medical team. The NHS and local authorities gave £429k towards care at Douglas House
The employer of choice
• Consolidate the major review undertaken in 2008/2009 of terms and conditions of employment.
• The review was completed and terms and conditions were found to be exemplary and are equitable across the organisation. We are now broadly in line with similar roles in the NHS
• Our first staff survey was conducted, the results of which show that Helen & Douglas House has a committed and content workforce
The charity of choice for donors and volunteers
• Diversify fundraising methods, especially through regular giving and building closer relationships with donors to work towards a sustainable annual income
• Further develop the network of volunteers who support the charity’s work
• Open an additional 6 shops
• 6 new shops opened, bringing the total to 28 as of 31st March 2010
• Voluntary income grew by 26%, including a 16% increase in regular giving. The number and size of corporate partnerships also rose, and our first Life! Art Show raised in excess of £120k
• The number of volunteers increased from 400 in 2008/2009 to over 650, involved in everything from helping with the care team, to working in our charity shops
