jured, though the car and light pole were totaled. About 30 minutes after the accident took place, we were standing in a yard waiting for the tow truck to arrive and re- move the car. Sud- denly, the guy who owned the home where the accident occurred appeared at his front door. Wondering what
had happened, he said he had been in his base- ment and had just come up. If he had only waited a few more minutes the scene would have been cleaned up and he would have been left wondering what had happened to his light pole.
Over the years I’ve received a lot of law enforce-
ment training in an effort to better understand the responsibilities and tasks that are placed on vari- ous response teams within the department. A few yeas ago I was able to get hostage negotiation training in Las Vegas. At a SWAT team training held at the old Utah County Jail a few weeks ago, there were multiple teams, including the negotia- tors, who responded and were faced with a hostage
December 18, 2010 Dear Mayor Curtis,
I was so saddened to learn of the devastating fire at the beloved Provo Tabernacle. I cannot begin to compre- hend the sense of loss our friends in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are feeling along with our entire community.
The Provo Tabernacle was not only a Latter-day Saints house of worship, but also a wonderful historical build- ing that opened its doors to people of all faiths. It created a beautiful environment that set the stage for so many wonderful community gatherings. I personally recall attending President Rex Lee’s funeral and numer- ous National Day of Prayer services there. It is hard to imagine the downtown without this iconic edifice. We are comforted by the fact our memories will remain with us while we mourn our inability to create new memo- ries in the historic Provo Tabernacle.
Our congregation joins with our entire community in prayer for wisdom for Provo City and the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as they search for the best response to this tragic loss. On behalf of our entire congregation please express our heartfelt sorrow and willingness to serve if needed.

situation in- volving five captives. One of the hostages was named Tom. We had a great train- ing session and everyone did a wonder- ful job. The training involved two different end- ings, one scenario ending with the hostage taker and Tom coming out alive, the second ending with the hostage taker killing his hostage and the SWAT team breaching the room.
The following Sunday I had a lady at church
pull me aside, knowing that I work with the Provo Police Department. She told me that she had been listening to her scanner that week and she was concerned about the hostages. I smiled and said it had just been a training class. We had a good laugh, but it was a good reminder that the public listens to our radio traffic, yet they don’t always know what they are listening to.
