Buy a Foreign Car, Park Somewhere Else (Posted Aug. 26) I have been thinking about the


issue raised of signs at auto-assembly plants around the country banning non- GM, Ford or Chrysler products. I note that Ford once owned Jaguar, Chrysler is owned by Fiat, and GMis manufac- turing cars in Brazil,Mexico and, dare I say it, China. Half the parts in these cars are made overseas by non-union workers. But none of this seems to car- rymuch weight with theUAW. Let’s see if I can parse this situation

their jobs. Now why is that? From what I can see, it’s mostly because of the long- term benefits paid to UAWworkers, long after they stoppedworking. All three companies owe many bil-


lions in unfunded retirement andmedical benefits to millions of retired workers. I’m not begrudging these benefits; how- ever, the companies that are giving them must be able to pay for them. That is a


problem. I understand that management agreed to the benefits, and probably shouldn’t have, but no matter what the reason, there simply isn’t enoughmoney. There also is the issue ofwork rules.
