Brother and Sister Corner By Judy Wardrope

ebbie McDonald’s Brentina and Sven Rothenberger’s
Barclay II are full siblings from breeder Wilhelm Rethorst from Badbergen, Germany, who owned the dam. Both Hanoverians competed at the Olympics and World Cup Finals in dressage—Brentina for the USA and Barclay for The Netherlands—but Brentina outperformed her baby brother. These siblings provide us
with the opportunity to examine them for both similarities and differences beyond gender, color and markings. Let’s see what we can find in regards to functional conformation. Both have excellent lumbosacral placement with the lumbosacral gap being intersected by a line drawn from the top of one hip to the top of the other hip. This provides maximum transmission of power from the hindquarters. And both have the ilium side
(point of hip to point of buttock) as the shortest side of the rear triangle, which is typical of top dressage horses. However, Barclay’s ilium has slightly less of a slope than his sister’s. Although it is not clear from the angle of the side-view photos, both have high tail sets. Please note that in the photo of Barclay from the rear, his left front is not crooked; it is just an unfortunate moment in time. He did not want to stand properly…or stand still for that
